Gizmodo: Facebook’s News Team Regularly Supressed ‘Conservative News’

I’m not surprised, nor angry, by the story out from Gizmodo this morning– who interviewed a few Facebook whistleblowers that worked on the very popular news section–claiming the company regularly injected a liberal bias into their news stream.

I suppose people assumed Facebook’s algorithms did all the work, when in fact human bias plays a significant role in choosing which stories get featured on the social media site.

If any of you thought Zuckerberg’s bias wouldn’t permeate his website, you’re nuts.

“Depending on who was on shift, things would be blacklisted or trending,” said the former curator. This individual asked to remain anonymous, citing fear of retribution from the company. The former curator is politically conservative, one of a very small handful of curators with such views on the trending team. “I’d come on shift and I’d discover that CPAC or Mitt Romney or Glenn Beck or popular conservative topics wouldn’t be trending because either the curator didn’t recognize the news topic or it was like they had a bias against Ted Cruz.”

The former curator was so troubled by the omissions that they kept a running log of them at the time; this individual provided the notes to Gizmodo. Among the deep-sixed or suppressed topics on the list: former IRS official Lois Lerner, who was accused by Republicans of inappropriately scrutinizing conservative groups; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker; popular conservative news aggregator the Drudge Report; Chris Kyle, the former Navy SEAL who was murdered in 2013; and former Fox News contributor Steven Crowder. “I believe it had a chilling effect on conservative news,” the former curator said.

Another former curator agreed that the operation had an aversion to right-wing news sources. “It was absolutely bias. We were doing it subjectively. It just depends on who the curator is and what time of day it is,” said the former curator. “Every once in awhile a Red State or conservative news source would have a story. But we would have to go and find the same story from a more neutral outlet that wasn’t as biased.”

Stories covered by conservative outlets (like Breitbart, Washington Examiner, and Newsmax) that were trending enough to be picked up by Facebook’s algorithm were excluded unless mainstream sites like the New York Times, the BBC, and CNN covered the same stories.

Other former curators interviewed by Gizmodo denied consciously suppressing conservative news, and we were unable to determine if left-wing news topics or sources were similarly suppressed. The conservative curator described the omissions as a function of his colleagues’ judgements; there is no evidence that Facebook management mandated or was even aware of any political bias at work.

Managers on the trending news team did, however, explicitly instruct curators to artificially manipulate the trending module in a different way: When users weren’t reading stories that management viewed as important, several former workers said, curators were told to put them in the trending news feed anyway. Several former curators described using something called an “injection tool” to push topics into the trending module that weren’t organically being shared or discussed enough to warrant inclusion—putting the headlines in front of thousands of readers rather than allowing stories to surface on their own. In some cases, after a topic was injected, it actually became the number one trending news topic on Facebook.

“We were told that if we saw something, a news story that was on the front page of these ten sites, like CNN, the New York Times, and BBC, then we could inject the topic,” said one former curator. “If it looked like it had enough news sites covering the story, we could inject it—even if it wasn’t naturally trending.” Sometimes, breaking news would be injected because it wasn’t attaining critical mass on Facebook quickly enough to be deemed “trending” by the algorithm. Former curators cited the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris as two instances in which non-trending stories were forced into the module. Facebook has struggled to compete with Twitter when it comes to delivering real-time news to users; the injection tool may have been designed to artificially correct for that deficiency in the network. “We would get yelled at if it was all over Twitter and not on Facebook,” one former curator said.

“Facebook got a lot of pressure about not having a trending topic for Black Lives Matter.”

In other instances, curators would inject a story—even if it wasn’t being widely discussed on Facebook—because it was deemed important for making the network look like a place where people talked about hard news. “People stopped caring about Syria,” one former curator said. “[And] if it wasn’t trending on Facebook, it would make Facebook look bad.” That same curator said the Black Lives Matter movement was also injected into Facebook’s trending news module. “Facebook got a lot of pressure about not having a trending topic for Black Lives Matter,” the individual said. “They realized it was a problem, and they boosted it in the ordering. They gave it preference over other topics. When we injected it, everyone started saying, ‘Yeah, now I’m seeing it as number one’.” This particular injection is especially noteworthy because the #BlackLivesMatter movement originated on Facebook, and the ensuing media coverage of the movement often noted its powerful social media presence.

(In February, CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed his support for the movement in an internal memo chastising Facebook employees for defacing Black Lives Matter slogans on the company’s internal “signature wall.”)

When stories about Facebook itself would trend organically on the network, news curators used less discretion—they were told not to include these stories at all. “When it was a story about the company, we were told not to touch it,” said one former curator. “It had to be cleared through several channels, even if it was being shared quite a bit. We were told that we should not be putting it on the trending tool.”

Truth be told, this is damning news for the Facebook brand. Although I’m cynical and believe everyone is as crooked as Hillary, many people trust Facebook to deliver unbiased ‘trending’ topics. These miscreants are nothing more than hacks toiling away, venting their frustrations out through their biases.

Facebook, like most media companies in America, are nothing more than propaganda arms for the government.

I bet this fucking story won’t trend on Facebook.

We have been immersed in Right Wing propaganda for decades in the U.S 24/7. But, incredible as it may seem, some organization somewhere was found to have a liberal bias. And it’s not even a news company. Oh the horror.

Anyone with any respect for the truth ends up with a liberal bias anyway, since, as the great Colbert has said “Truth has a well known liberal bias.”

Most other Right Wing news sources are similar to Fox in this way.

They’re not news programs but at least they don’t try to lie, except in satire in the course of doing a humorous gag. So, yes, it would actually be much better to tune in to Colbert and Stewart, if they existed. The Colbert Show and Jon Stewart’s show are both off the air now. But how would anyone notice that, in our Right Wing propaganda flooded country?

      Frog,

Facebook has a section called “Trending.” This section is not what is trending. This section is “What is trending that Facebook approves of.” That is the issue and that is the lie. The feature should be called “Facebook approved items” instead of “Trending.” Because the “Trending” stories are not always included in the “Trending” section. Does this make more sense?

There is suppression of news and reporting from a perspective.
I have no problem with the slant of NYT, Wash Post, CNN.
I have a problem if a news outlet uses suppression of news as its slant.
But then Facebook is not really a news outlet

Yes, it should be called that.

But I would be very surprised if bias in “trending” or whatever else Internet companies are doing, is not rampant all over the Internet. People call the Internet the Information Superhighway. And it is like that, in parts. But mostly it is the Advertising Superhighway. Everybody is trying to sell you something constantly when you are on it–whether a product, a service, or a political view.

99% of the political biases sold to people in the U.S. are Right Wing. Which is why I am not horrified at this one situation where the bias is Left Wing. It does stands out is that the bias sold to people is almost never Left Wing.

Here is just one of zillions of examples of Right Wing political bias being marketed to us under our very noses, that most people never realize is happening:

America’s “most trusted news source” is Right Wing– Fox News. This despite the fact that it makes people more ignorant to watch it.

        http://www.businessinsider.com/study-watching-fox-news-makes-you-less-informed-than-watching-no-news-at-all-2012-5

The great majority of people on this site hold Right Wing views. Why is that? In part, it’s because you read Right Wing biased news, without even realizing it.

Almost everything is Right Wing in this country, news included. Bashing Obama and Hillary 24/7/365 is the national pastime. The Right Wing controls both Houses of Congress, most state legislatures, most state governorships, and controlled SCOTUS until Scalia died. All Dems have is the presidency, and thus nothing progressive gets done, or even heard, except what little can be done through executive order without any cooperation from Congress. The Democratic president can’t even get a hearing for his SCOTUS nominee.

Fly, for someone who seemingly appreciates the written word, you do a terrible job of reading.

You make claims that go beyond even what the anonymous former contract employee claimed.

I read all the Gawker pieces about the former news curators, and this is what emerges:
–Facebook didn’t want trending news pieces that linked to sites (“like Breitbart, Washington Examiner, and Newsmax”) that have a reputation for ignoring standards of journalism, and would instead link to reputable outlets covering the stories

–consistent with the above, news topics that were trending among Facebook users, but sourced only from crap sites, were left off the trending page

–the Facebook algorithm for ranking trending stories had a slower response time to breaking news than Twitter did, and didn’t always pick up news items that were front-page stories at major media outlets, so curators “injected” these stories onto the trending page

–Facebook didn’t want the contract curators to post trending stories referring to Twitter by name, and required clearance for stories about Facebook.

    That’s it.

The Gawker cites a single ex-curator who’s information about suppression of conservative topics is entirely consistent with Facebook trying not to link to crappy sites. Another curator who confirms that Facebook didn’t want to link to those sites put it this way: “Every once in awhile a Red State or conservative news source would have a story. But we would have to go and find the same story from a more neutral outlet that wasn’t as biased.”

I think you’re forgetting about the whole point of this exercise.

The Facebook news is SUPPOSED TO BE FUCKING TRENDING. By trending, that means what people are reading most.

The standards by which journalism is to be judged is left to the people in all trending world. Otherwise, like I said, it’s curated news.

      Get it?

What if some of the stuff that was trending was not news but lies from propaganda sites? “News” is supposed to be factual. E.g. does Facebook have an obligation to classify stories from National Enquirer about space aliens, complete with photo shopped photos of the alens, as “news?”

I guess this is going according to the old fashioned standards that news is supposed to be facts rather than entertainment though. And I can see that people don’t use that standard any more. Young as he is, I guess Zuckerberg has old fashioned standards in that way.

I never debate you on your views regarding the media. But let me just say this. The bias in the media is 95% liberal. I do not know what you speak of when you say right wing news is everywhere. Fox isn’t conservative. They do not represent the views of conservatives. As a matter of fact, many of their hosts are liberals.

Every other network is blatantly liberal, from NPR, MSNBC, CNN, CNBC, CBS, ABC etc.

All of the newspapers are overtly liberal. The only bastion of right wing news can be found online or on radio.

As for FB. Trending is trending. It is not their job to sift through it if they are going to say it’s trending.
