Saturday Cinema with Le Fly: Sinatra, All or Nothing At All

The Chairman of the Board, a man who has never waited on a line in his life, Frank Sinata. I’ve seen scores of documentaries, several about old blue eyes. This one made by HBO was easily the best Sinatra documentary and one of the best I’ve ever seen.

For those of you with HBO go access, you can watch it here.

Otherwise, go scour the Internet for it. I know it’s out there.

He lead a life that can only de described as lunacy, but also legendary. He was one of the best ever.

The man sitting with him, Jackie Gleason. definitely gave Frank a run for his money.

I’m a fan and admire Frank Sinatra’s work and how he lived his life with style and to full extent.

However this 1985 performance illustrates the wisdom of exiting the stage on top. It must be very hard to let go and leave at your best, and Mr.Sinatra did not.

I think the “Strangers in the Night” period would have been a marvelous exit point for a remarkable career and talent.

Today’s Exhibit A is Paul McCartney. His voice has diminished with age, no doubt Paul knows this, and knew it before anyone else did. His current performances are painful. Maybe the idea is a Paul McCartney show is a shared bittersweet experience of aging and tearful nostalgia? Personally I’d rather put on a pair of headphones and listen to the original recordings and performances.

Remember someone in their glory, not in their decline.

There is a YouTube video of the remaining Beach Boys singing live in a studio interview.
In a song Brian Wilson originally sang lead on, he goes silent in the portions where he can no longer hit the note or register, while the band mates carry on. The look on Brian’s face says it all.
