Trump’d: U.S. Treasury Places China, Japan on FX ‘Unfair Practices’ List

In other words, they’re both ripping us off. Where have we heard this before?

Under the new law, Treasury officials developed three criteria to decide if countries are being unfair: an economy has a trade surplus with the U.S. above $20 billion; has a current-account surplus amounting to more than 3 percent of that economy’s gross-domestic product; and has repeatedly depreciated its currency by buying foreign assets equivalent to 2 percent of output over the year.

This is a softball approach to kindly asking China and Japan to stop robbing us. The last time the U.S. flagged a major trading partner as being a ‘manipulator’ was China in 1994. Since then, the U.S. has clammed up about currency manipulation, a precedent that was started under the Clinton regime and continued henceforth.

If elected President, the presumptive GOP nominee promises to declare both China and Japan as currency manipulators.

Could this just be Obama trying to rob Trump of his “tough on trade” rhetoric?

How about giving Obama credit for something good he does for a change? If it’s good, then why not appreciate it?

I know some folks feel like they have to put Obama down, no matter how many good things he does. But it really isn’t necessary. Why not be as kind to Obama as history will probably be?

Yes, probably. But, okay, let’s suppose he recognized Trump’s idea as a good one, and he used the idea, extended it, developed specific criteria etc. If that’s what he did, it’s still a good thing to do. We could do worse than to have a president who takes the good ideas offered by others and implements them.

Let’s say he didn’t exist, what empirical evidence is there that states the said parameters are a net positive. I’m going to guess if there is, it was a study from an overpaid ivy league brainiac PhD who has absolutely 0 experience in trade but his numbers equalled out….. Ideas are great, everyone has them, execution is what matters, this administration has continually failed to execute.

Well, he is executing on this idea. Will you give him credit?

I didn’t think so. I am sure you can find innumerable reasons for not giving Obama credit for good things he does. It seems to be the constant pastime of Right Wingers to bash Obama and to find reasons to not give him credit for good things he does. So don’t let me disturb your favorite hobby.

Obama could have done a lot more if Obama’s goals were not blocked by Congress. They refused to pass the big stimulus that would have helped the economy to recover faster. Congress won’t even cooperate in small ways, such as giving a hearing to Obama’s SCOTUS nominee. He’s not perfect. But he did get Obamacare through, and did a number of other things which I like.

For an Obama hater, there is never enough evidence to show that anything Obama does is a net positive. But no evidence is required for that same person to jump to the conclusion that their favorite Right Wing politician’s vague suggestions are always pure gold.

You’re like a lawyer, making the case to prosecute an accused person– always finding reasons to see them as guilty, never giving the accused person credit for anything good, find ways to side with the people who want the accused person to be prosecuted. That is the current state of American political discourse, unfortunately.

No wonder most of our national problems are going unsolved. Voters don’t want to ever give credit, except to someone outside the system who has never done anything politically at all. And voters often look for a way to place blame, perhaps many politicians (like our Congress) decide it’s safer to do nothing.

We need fewer lawyer types trying to find some political official they don’t like, as guilty no matter what. We need more scientist types, trying to be objective and fair no matter what, giving credit where credit is due, even to political officials they aren’t personally madly in love with.

Wait, Obama is a lawyer, no? Frog I think your awesome for sticking to your opinions. But no matter what someone says about Obama you get defensive. That is a clear sign that even you have doubts. I’m an atheist that believes in abortion, can’t stand rednecks or country music, I don’t belong to a country club, but you lump me in with John boehner. People aren’t that simple it’s not black and white. I agree with you Lawyers have systematically destroyed this country through excess regulations. But Obama is one of them.

Well, the Obama bashing habit has gotten around to many different groups of people. The Obama bashing does affect many groups because it is done by Right Wingers, not just in Right Wing publications but in mainstream ones too– wherever Right Wing folks are allowed to publish. Unfortunately, many publications want Right Wingers to contribute for “balance” even if what they contribute is untrue and/or extremely biased.

“But no matter what someone says about Obama you get defensive.”

Not so. The man has his flaws and I’ve admitted some of themhere. But it certainly is the case that matter what Obama says or does, numerous people here attack him.

I don’t believe that lawyers have systematically destroyed this country through excess regulations. Some regulations are useful. Some just gum up the works. If we had had some different and better regs in 2008, we would not have had to bail out the banks because they would have been prohibited by law from taking risks that high.

Are you a Libertarian? That is, at least in the U.S., a kind of Right Wing person. Libertarians here consistently vote Republican.

2008 tipping point may have been lack of regulation but the build up was a result of politicians creating an environment of everyone should get a home no matter what, and they should get to send their kids to college no matter ability to pay. Basically signalling to the populous and the banks to lever up we got you.

I consider myself an independent, Dems have some good social policies, repubs have some good fiscal and defense ideas. Libertarians idea of liberty and freedom is a no brainier.

I don’t think politics should be like sports where you support the partyno matter what.

trader confessions, That’s a validly logical presumption.

However, ironbird, w/o introspection women are often their own worst enemy when it comes to promoting women in mixed company, especially if the female is hetero.

I would posit: that given the theoretical situation of having two candidates 1 an african-american gay male and 1 a gay female, there is a better chance that the gay male will win especially if he is military. Being military might give the female points. National Economy, the male will win.

Ppl would ask themselves, “How could any woman, gay or hetero, understand what it is to be a man and have to provide , that is, based on international economy as opposed to household economy which doesn’t count b/c we discount everything that is traditionally a woman’s role.

We do this to be kind to our men b/c we believe that men are supposed to have to have stronger connection to their Rational/Wise Mind as opposed to our women who should have a disposition towards Rational/Emotional Mind. Is it hard wiring whereby the signals can never be redirected? No. And often men are as Rational/Emotional as any woman.

Take into consider the eons of societal and religious bias and psyche war. Take into consideration generalized anatomy and physiology. Ask yourself, should I base my choice now, in this day and age, on these schemas.

Frog, King Obamy is a professional politician. That’s what people see. They gonna hate when he takes a bold wise idea from an opponent and pussifies it to the world as a semi-wise idea of his own.

Of course he’s a professional politician. And we the people have set up the rules of government such that only professional politicians win elections. So if someone is to blame for having professional politicians in office, it is we the people.

Because of the tribal nature of politics, of course if your guy has some vague idea and then the current president fleshes it out and uses the idea and implements it in a highly specific and useful form, this is just one more invitation to Obama bashing.

Although he didn’t give the Donald credit for the initial vague idea, I am sure that you and others will make sure everyone knows that Donald had the original vague idea. And I don’t begrudge you or him that. But calling it “pussified” is a tribal thing, IMHO. If the Donald became pres and did it in EXACTLY this same form, you and Trump’s other supporters would laud the idea as courageous and super wise.

Tribal stuff. My tribe says/does something. I think of a reason why it’s the greatest things since sliced bread. If your tribe says/does EXACTLY the same thing, it’s pussified, evil, stupid, and a sign that that tribe hates America.

Thanks at least for characterizing Obama’s specific idea as semi-wise. That’s the closest thing I’ve seen to one of you non-Demcratic tribe people here, being willing to give a bit of credit where credit is due.

I think some lawyers in politics is a necessity, since a government is about laws. And having a Constitutional scholar like Obama for president is good. I just think there should be some variety in backgrounds in Congress and in the presidency.

And I think more objectivity, as is more common in scientists than in lawyers, would be a good thing for us voters, as well as our political officials to strive for.

We are ripping off the Chinese, if anything. Just look at the fortune Apple made off iPhones built with $1 an hour labor.

We’ve been ripping off the Chinese ever since the Transcontinental Railroad. Hell, ever since Marco Polo got the invention of Paper and the Compass from them in the 13th century. They didn’t get shit from Marco. He must have read the Art of the Deal.

Actually that is true in a sense. All countries use each other, and many abuse each other. The question is: Is it fair?

Thanks for bringing this up, because it is an interesting an complex question: Are China and the U.S. (and the same with Japan and other countries) giving to each other and getting from each other about equally? Or is one country overall abusing the other?

These issues are far more complex than they might initially seem. One has to look at much more than just currency valuations. And there are matters of government and also matters of private corporations like AAPL.

Whichever nation has the larger GDP is generally going to have the competitive advantage in any negotiation. That’s a simplification, but it’s pretty much a mathematical reality.

All you need to know is that Trump’s rhetoric about Mexico and China ripping us off is complete garbage. People just love to be told they are the victim. Especially when the opposite it true.

Bernie’s shtick about Wall Street and big banks abusing the middle class is nonsense too, but it isn’t as bad.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Run Through The Jungle Lyrics

Whoa thought it was a nightmare
    Lord it was so true

They told me don’t go walking slow
    The devil’s on the loose

    Better run through the jungle
    Better run through the jungle
    Better run through the jungle
Whoa don’t look back to see

    Thought I heard a rumblin’
    Calling to my name

Two hundred million guns are loaded
    Satan cries “take aim”

    Better run through the jungle
    Better run through the jungle
    Better run through the jungle
Whoa don’t look back to see

Over on the mountain, thunder magic spoke
Let the people know my wisdom
    Fill the land with smoke

    Better run through the jungle
    Better run through the jungle
    Better run through the jungle
Whoa don’t look back to see

ObamaCare is very similar to a Heritage Foundation health care proposal. But when the Right Wing Heritage Foundation proposed it, Right Wingers loved it. When Obama proposed it, it was labeled as Communist or socialist and evil by the Right Wing.

It’s no wonder we never get our problems solved in the U.S. If Obama solved them all tomorrow, not only could he not get credit, it would be seen as a reason to bash him. If he negotiated world peace, ended world hunger, and solved the world’s energy and climate problems, Right Wingers would find some way to bash him for that.

Maybe some Right Wing politician might have vaguely mentioned that peace, ending hunger, and solving energy problems might be good thing. E.g. people might say “How horrible of Obama not to give that person credit for these non-specific ideas from which his ideas came.”

We need to find some ways to cooperate to get things done. Bashing does not solve problems very well.

No…wait, actually bashing does solve problems. It solves the problem of the crony capitalists who have bought government. Their problem is “How do we Divide and Conquer the general public, so that they are powerless to combat us, as we rob them blind, send their kids off to unnecessary wars etc. etc.”

It solves that problem very well, actually.

One of the strongest indicators that we are totally immersed in the Kool Aid of Right Wing propaganda is the fact that during the reign of GW Bush, the American flag was flying in the corner of the TV all during the Iraq War, and Bush was supported with his lies about WMD, as if he was great.

Now, Obama finds a way to get people over the pre-existing condition obstacle in health care, and to help people who couldn’t afford health care to have more access. And this– and everything else good that Obama does, is painted as evil by America’s most trusted news source, and tons of other Right Wing “news sources”, according to surveys.
