WHO ALERT: The Zika Virus is Coming and There’s No Cure

This one is especially disdainful, as it target babies.

Out of the Amazon jungle, an insidious baby killing virus has been unleashed, infecting thousands of infants in Brazil. World Health Organization officials say it will soon spread across the Americas, into the United States–just in time for summer.

“We’ve got no drugs and we’ve got no vaccines. It’s a case of deja vu because that’s exactly what we were saying with Ebola,” said Trudie Lang, a professor of global health at the University of Oxford. “It’s really important to develop a vaccine as quickly as possible.”

Large drugmakers’ investment in tropical disease vaccines with uncertain commercial prospects has so far been patchy, prompting health experts to call for a new system of incentives following the Ebola experience.

“We need to have some kind of a plan that makes (companies) feel there is a sustainable solution and not just a one-shot deal over and over again,” Francis Collins, director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, said last week.

The Sao Paulo-based Butantan Institute is currently leading the research charge on Zika and said last week it planned to develop a vaccine “in record time”, although its director warned this was still likely to take three to five years.

British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline said on Monday it was studying the feasibility of using its vaccine technology on Zika, while France’s Sanofi said it was reviewing possibilities.

No drugs, cures, treatments–nothing. Just brain damage for babies. Fucking great.

Maybe Hillary should send out another tweet, bashing pharma companies. I’m sure they’ll be highly incentivized and motivated to dump billions of dollars in researching a cure with a 10% chance of approval…

Just because an industry does some things that are good doesn’t mean they get to gouge sick people and let them die by hiking the prices of their drugs super high without cause. Doing some good things does not cause a person or a company to bee beyond reproach, no matter what they do.

Well, there is sort of a cure. Pregnant women can not be bitten by a mosquito. So I guess if you are going to get pregnant you don’t get to go outside your mosquito net. Looks like 80% of people won’t know they even have it. Looks like already born babies are OK too…

FYI: There is no cure for any influenza. There is only the hope of a vaccine and mosquito control (think bats).

As you mentioned, there is treatment to ameliorate the body’s immune responses which go ape-shit (pardon my french).

Yellow fever causes 200,000 infections and 30,000 deaths every year; with nearly 90% of these occurring in Africa; and there is a vaccine; and CNN was going crazy over Ebola.

UncleBuccs, Is that like Ebola or bust? I forgot to mention CLOROX $CLX and other ways to maintain cleanliness. Ahh! Good old fashion Lysol (in the brown bottle).

I’m sure there environmentally sound ways to cut back on the risk of exposure.

And for God’s sake people wash your hands! We live in a first world nation (unless you are in Flint, MI). I hate it when my food source becomes polluted.

Some animals we shouldn’t get rid of because they affect other animals and plants and food crops etc. in beneficial ways. But I wonder, is there any good done by the mosquito? If not, as long as humans seem to be wiping out a lot of species, why not wipe out mosquitoes? They seem to cause a lot of horrible diseases.

But then maybe they are like cockroaches– a species that everyone would love to see go away, but instead they are indestructible– able to survive anything, even a nuclear war.
