As of right now, I am nothing but the work that I have yet to accomplish. With a brand new year comes brand new expectations, the proverbial clean slate. In my mind, 2014 is going to be a fantastic year; but I bet Bill Ackman and Ron “the corporation killer” Johnson thought the same on 1/1/13.
If you had difficulties believing the cultish meltups of 2013 and underperformed, kick that emotional noise to the side now and take a fresh look at things.
This post is without bias or agenda to discuss themes and/or stocks that I own or want to own. It is simply a statement of fact, one that has given me great solace in the past.
I recall having horrendous years, cursing my wretched setbacks and the errs of my ways until I was blue in the face. Just last year I gave back 30% of my assets inside of the last 4 months of the year. I neglected business relationships, mostly due to boredom and hubris–but still managed to enter 2013 with a full chest and determination to succeed. Luckily, with some crafty moves and a blessed market, I made over 70% for clients last year, fully redeeming the lackluster performance of the previous two years.
The truth of it all is, as long as you’re in the game, you can win it. Work hard and be industrious; I am sure you’ll find a way, we’ll find a way, to have a pleasurable and profitable 2014.

Pyramid Brewing Co., has a great selection of winter brews in a 12-pack case, check them out, they were all excellent. On another note, I cancelled my Angie’s subscription and the customer service rep offered me a 25% discount to keep it. I used it sparingly.
Looking forward to another great year Sir Fly and co!
Dr. Fly, thank you for the words of motivation. I am currently working this evening on my investment strategies for this new year.
Your last paragraph reminds me of a quote from Professor Louis Pasteur,
“Dans les champs de l’observation le hasard ne favorise que les esprits préparés.”
…which loosely translates into, “In the field of observation, chance favors the prepared mind.”
Though I prefer the more simplified version, “…Chance favors the prepared mind.”, which was the version used in the Steven Seagal movie, Under Siege 2.
Good luck to everyone who will work hard this year.
