Reports Q2 (Jun) earnings of $0.19 per share, $0.05 better than the Capital IQ Consensus Estimate of $0.14; revenues rose 53.1% year/year to $1.81 bln vs the $1.62 bln consensus.
- Key Metrics: Daily active users (DAUs) were 699 mln on average for June 2013, an increase of 27% year-over-year.
- Monthly active users (MAUs) were 1.15 bln as of June 30, 2013, an increase of 21% year-over-year.
- Mobile MAUs were 819 mln as of June 30, 2013, an increase of 51% year-over-year. Mobile DAUs were 469 mln on average for June 2013.
- Mobile advertising revenue represented ~41% of advertising revenue for the second quarter of 2013 versus expectations of ~32.5%.
- GAAP operating margin was 31% for the second quarter of 2013, compared to negative 63% in the second quarter of 2012. Excluding share-based compensation and related payroll tax expenses, non-GAAP operating margin was 44% for the second quarter of 2013, compared to 43% for the second quarter of 2012.

Google Explore is brand new, and it will end up dominating YELP. It can compete with yelp with its zagat resourcea and will dominate yelp by integrating that service with all the other services gmaps provides.
That Google Maps integration. Hugely problematic for Yelp, right?

I use Yelp all the time after Fly recommended it. I don’t think integration with Google Maps will mean squat for Google Explore. Yelp already has reviews (do I care if they’re Zagat reviews?…No). Yelp will win this battle.
YELP has a very big category lead at this point, imo—and an executive team capable of extending it. Zagat was way cool in the 90s, though. GOOG should have bought YELP instead.

They should have bought YELP, maybe. But it’s irrelevant now. Ultimately, Google is making an enormous push into not just finding out how to get somewhere (directions, gmaps), but also finding somewhere to go in the first place. Eateries, pubs, events, etc. All in one, easy to use, mobile app. Good luck, YELP.
Just did a search for my favorite Japanese restaurant in our area. Yelp has 300 reviews, Google 6 reviews and most are 1-2 sentences each. People that care about what they eat enough to look for reviews aren’t going to rely on Google. Don’t even get me started on Facebook reviews for restaurants.
Are Yelp reviews massaged by payments to Yelp by the business? Not to say this is bad, but it should be disclosed to users and transparent.
