What do you make of Soros and JCP?
JCP is no longer a short because Ron Johnson is no longer there to ruin the company. I said JCP was a buy when he resigned.
CREE is probably the big-daddy in the LED space, and their qtr was really not all that hot. The market appears willing to look past it – counting on their thesis that the cycle still has legs. Maybe it does, but I dont think so.
CREE also has a somewhat unique position with their streetlights – its a fairly easy pitch to muni’s that upgrading to LED’s will save money.
The bear case is still all there though. Its based on a) margin compression from chinese providers b) uptake is slower then expected due to costs and c) they are selling a product that lasts for 30+years – great for the end user but difficult to create a recurring revenue stream from. The next analyst that looks at current lighting with a 2 yr refresh cycle and says LED’s will take 50% of that thus its a $50billion market…
