Regarding yesterday’s tragedy, it sounds now like one thing that would have helped would have been better communication between the mental health system & the legal system.
Apparently this 20 year old was known to have a mental disorder & also was in frequent trouble with the law. I don’t know his full situation of course. But my guess is that he probably should have been court ordered to have a mental health evaluation done & then court ordered into some kind of highly structured mental health treatment.
Often parents think they can take care of the needs of their mentally ill kid by themselves. And sometimes that’s true. But when the kid keeps running afoul of the law in serious ways, he may need more help than a family can supply.
Police say they have found information on his motive. But it probably doesn’t matter. If a person has a severe mental illness & dysfunctional brain chemistry, they may do things that no sane person would even consider doing, regardless of any “motive” that may be present. E.g. if they can’t tell the difference between playing a violent video game & acting in the real world, their “motive” is not going to help anyone to make sense of their actions.
Too bad the liberals shut down so many of the asylums.
