Bracing For the Storm Ahead

Thanks to the help of Chuck Bennett, I was able to secure a 4,000 watt generator, from some nefarious creature living in the backwoods of New Jersey. This ‘gent’ had a fairly large “jerk-off hole” in his pants and was heaving up a storm, like due to his emphysema like condition. His backyard was littered with lawn mowers (the riding type) and lots of other stolen goods. Chuck and I tried our best to not laugh in his face, instead opting to mildly mock his “Pakistani-like existence”–living in the part of NJ that no one gives a shit about.

I paid him $650 and went on my way.

The House of Fly is stocked with 6 months supply of grain and the pantry has more than 1 weeks worth of water/dry goods. The main concern stems from the high water table in the Princeton area, which has plagued many a basement with floods during power outages. The sump pumps must be energized, at all times. Since I just moved in, I have been unable to have a large natural gas, permanent, generator installed. I will make sure to do so next spring.

So I had to fish around for generators, finding myself #205 on the Sears waiting list. All hardware stores were sold out, within a 150 mile radius. It’s fucking ridiculous.

GNRC is making a killing.

For now, I’m kicking back, listening to some music, consuming sone Chimay Grande Reserve–putting two middle fingers up whenever the weather man speaks.

Well done on the generator, living in PA I am hoping the rivers flood enough for me to take my kayak down while navigating fast currents and avoiding trees & undertows.

Hope you stashed away mega gallons of fuel for the genset. You’ll be amazed how thirsty those suckers get when pulling a full 4K load or close to it!
Good luck!

I just asked this in your previous post, didn’t see the new one. I’ll skip all the non-essential banter. Would you tell me what stat or combination thereof that you look at to determine that an equity is ‘heavily’ shorted, i guess what I’m getting at is where the word heavily comes in as opposed to average. I see put call ratio, but I’m not sure how to tell if it’s “out of balance” per se… thanks… sorry if it’s a dumb question, but I’ve been raised to believe there are no dumb questions, just a lot of inquisitive idiots.. cheers!

I hope those who are impacted by the storm do not suffer serious physical, financial or mental harm.

It is a hassle, but part of life . I do not fear the storm, my anxiety is the reaction of other people to the storm.

Today, Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson writes, “Some of Obama’s opponents have tried to delegitimize his presidency because he doesn’t embody the America they once knew. He embodies the America of now.” The last sentence sounds eerily like this blog’s entry by the editor.

No apology necessary on this site. With only a few exceptions, most people here would vote for R even if he is going to sell the whole of the U.S. to China. Or start 6 more wars in the Middle East. Or make it a crime to fail to attend church each Sunday.

Because they want low capital gains taxes. And no sacrifice is too great for them, in order to have lower capital gains taxes.

Excellent on the generator. What’s the trick to hooking it up to your house?

Reply
MX2101 says:

First and most important- the main utility power should be turned off by breaker or disconnect switch, and the generator must feed the house ONLY, not back-feed into the power company! That is, the generator output is downstream of the utility disconnect.

Unless the user is comfortable with doing this properly, I recommend running extension cords to devices that require back up power.

That means a hot plate will be used instead of the electric range.

Fuel and the generator itself will last longer if it is not run at maximum capacity.

Two approaches to a permanent system:

1. A generator big enough to handle the entire house load. This is transparent to the user, and with auto start and transfer, it is a wonderful thing..

2. Segmentation of house wiring and loads into two paths- generator and non-generator power. Folks with electric heating may need this approach, unless they are into a 15 to 25 KW generator.

Wow! This is why many people survive the worst only to die post-storm.

The natural gas backup generators that kick in automatically are the dream ~ if only I could afford one.

They are not that expensive. We typically install a 13 or 16KW unit, lock, stock and barrel, for around $4,500-$5,500 provided gas if already on the premises and no updates are required for the home electrical system.

Then please get licensed in MA ASAP. I’m paying about $8k for an 11kw GE model, plus the concrete pad and installation service.

The gentleman MX2101 knows of what he speaks, generator-wise.

It is also important to take into account the fuel consumption for a larger generator. You will need a large propane tank to make the big generators make sense.

MX2101 says:

Take the heavy gauge extension cord that will plug into the generator, cut off the female receptacle end and strip the insulation. SHUT OFF the utility power with the disconnect switch or the master breaker in the circuit breaker/fuse panel. Open up the panel and connect the generator feed to the HOUSE side of the disconnect switch. Or back feed it into an unused breaker. Best to do this in advance and have the extrension cord ready to go. But then the male end of the extension cord will be hot when utility power is on, and should not be left plugged into the generator or hanging in mid-air where a presenty living thing may touch it.

You could also back feed the generator into an outlet in the house, but this is insane considering the entire load is on that circuit.

Me, I bought two twenty packs of “votive” candles from Target.

Reply
MX2101 says:

btw- normal residential house power comes in at 240 volts with 120 volts from each “hot” to the neutral. From a pole drop, the two insulated wires are the 240 pair and the single uninsulated wire is the neutral.

Wiring a generator into the house distribution panel needs to be done correctly. If the generator has a 240 volt output, this could feed both 120 sides of the distribution panel. Otherwise you have to determine which 120 volt side gets the generator, or parallel them, and this task is way beyond the scope of keeping your food cold and a light on.

Therefore, I recommend using outdoor rated extension cords to run the critical things directly from the generator. If the generator has multiple 120 volt outlets, individual extension cords can be run to the various devices. This is fairly safe, and makes it easy to manage load, and also to know when utility power comes back on.

Heaterman says:

I would strongly urge anyone not familiar with 240V electrical service to stay the hell out of their breaker box.
Messing with the “juice” or running various types of non conventional heating equipment inside homes usually kills more people than the storm itself.
What you don’t know can and will literally kill you and possibly those you love.

MX2101 says:

Exactly correct Heaterman. I regret posting all that information, got carried away.

Use extension cords from the generator, and have a professional electrician do the pro stuff.

Call me suspect.

Sandy is barely holding 75 mph winds, the minimum needed to be called a hurricane. It keeps the media hyping the storm to get ratings, and the minimum wind speed needed so insurance companies can add a Hurricane Deductible to all policies, screwing all homeowners.

At 74 mph, none of this happens.

Btw, Irene was actually classified as a TS, three weeks after it hit.

Last week we bought an 11kw generator which is scheduled to be installed in two weeks. Which, for this storm, does us “fuck all good.”

All the best to The House of Fly and to the Tabbed Bloggers of iBC who are in harm’s way.

Not since Koufax took the mound has anyone been intimidated by a “Sandy.” Unless you were freaked out by Sandy Duncan’s glass eye, like I was as a kid.
