I don’t get all this catastrophizing. I live in Canada and our economy is doing fine considering the depth of this recession, our gov’t finances are in good shape, our stock market is recovering nicely and our banks are raking in mountains of cash without any gov’t help at all, and all this in a society that provides excellent first world quality health care for free. And our taxes are lower than yours too.
I don’t know how universal healthcare will affect investments now but I suspect in the long term it will be favourable. Not having to worry if your next illness is going to bankrupt you is a very positive thing.
You can’t explain health care to Americans they have been brain washed ever since the McCarthy days to fear any kind of socialism. Even though most people never get anywhere and 90% of the people have 10% of the money they believe in the system. They firmly believe unbridled capitalism, wall street and big business runs things better – as was evident over the last few years. They just don’t get free health care. It’s free – everyone pays in taxes, there are no fees, everyone gets it, thats it and it works. No fears selling stock to pay for health care – it is another worry not to have that stabilizes the economy.
Schools are free – road s are free is that socalist?? Would schools end up being cheaper and better for society if every parent had to pay to get kids in?
I was with some guys about 15 years ago and they were arguing with me telling me Canada had long lines (which is more propaganda). I asked if any of them had health care. None did. So i said, if you had health care you would have a shorter line – I get it.

You want to equate the public school system with services that may or may not save your life depending on their quality and dependability?

As for market trends, there was an article in Barrons a few weeks ago regarding The Investment Rate that is predicting 16 lean years of return starting in 2007 which is only the third major downturn in US history. The basis of the IR is not interest rates, biz invtys, economic or political models or housing starts but the core of all economic activity – People!
The assumption is that when people reach the avg age of 48 they start investing seriously for their retirement , swelling the flow of capital into the market. That flow peaked in 2007 and the decline has begun which could last until 2023. The basis of the decline is massive debt, medicare & social security expenses and the retirement of the baby-boomers.
Short term cycles are determined by actual demand for all asset classes as opposed to normalized demand. When current demand exceeds normal demand the economy is overheated and the market overextended. Conversely, the inverse makes for a good buying opportunity.
Currently the metric is even and has not yet exceeded the norm despite the lengthy rally but once it does the decline will resume for some time before finding a bottom.

Years ago, early 80’s, I was in Huntsville, Texas at college. One night our town was to host the first execution of a prisioner in Texas in many years. There was a hippy there trying to save the prisioner by protest, by holding a flower and saying, ” save him”. Most of the crowd was against him, if not all.
