There are no shoppers so there is no way is this a business making money. It reminds me of the “Field of Dreams” concept. “if you build it they will come”, except the mythical rich consuming Chinese or foreign shoppers haven’t shown up yet, nor do I don’t think they’ll ever show up.
Mish’s friend, the sculptor, is too pessimistic. At Goldratt’s talk the other night, he mentioned that the Chinese gummint had “flipped the switch” to decreeing (a certain percentage of good that wuold be) exports be internally consumed. This will hurt the import side here in the US, and to some extent, the exporters doing business in China as production slows. That said, China has the capital to internalize it’s economy, it’s just a matter of cultural shift to consumption.
End result — there will be blowoff from this massive overbuild, but “they will never show up” just ain’t happening. The wheel is rolling in China, and only massive war or revolution will knock it off track.
I am looking to get long China, btw, but I will be cautious, and slow.

Jake, I feel the same way about Brazil and the bigger foreign oils that have stakes there. Definitely not yet, though – as you say: be slow, cautious, and, I would add, choose companies where you get paid to wait. Repsol maybe?

Flaps — Maybe Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR), which I bot under $20 back in the dark days of last November, and which has not been too killed recently (“it’s all relative”). I also have a healthy portion of EEV as well, though, so take that for what its worth.
I can’t get completely in Phil’s bandwagon, however. Brazil is different from China in that it simply does not have the consumer base to keep it’s economy going if the U.S. starts to flag. It’s going to get uglier in Brazil if it gets ugly here. Not a good time to be making the jump, imo, unless one has a fotified family compound in which to retreat (I think Phil does, btw… I had a friend like him in bidness school who’s family owned Brahma Beer down there. Total party animal “let them eat caker” just like Phil, but likeable).
You can survive anywhere if you are resourceful and necessary to the populace. I once had a client who made cigs in Haiti, and they did fine for two reasons… 1) The had a walled compound patrolled by heavily armed guards, and 2) the Haitian folks liked their cigs and were protective of one of the very few solvent employers left on their half of the island. You want to talk poverty, though? They sold cigs their in “packs” of three.
