All ultra ETFs are basically designed to eventually go to zero. However, most will be very gradual, and you won’t notice it, sort of like a hole in your piggy bank. The NAVs get out of wack, and since they reflect the DAILY percentage moves, and not the overall percentage moves, they are going to be messy.
In a very extreme example, if you lost 95% one day, you’d need a 2000% gain to make up for it.
Not only that, but look at SKF and UYG… they behave poorly. Gio’s post may help a little.
Basically whomever manages these derivative instruments is going to have to sacrifice the gains at times, in order to make sure they can prevent the stock from going to zero as long as they can.
They work if the industry is about to boom like there’s no tommorrow, and the up days overwhelm the down days, and they work if you have quick in and out trades, but sideways, or lots of major down turns during an uptrend and both the ultra and ultra inverses are going to fuck you, pennies at a time.
Also, if you’re the Fly, it can work, as reality makes sure to adjust itself to satisfy the Fly… Warping the time-space continium, if need be.
Reality knows better than to mess with the Fly.

I may buy stocks that are Strong Sells, because I am prepared to average down. The rank Strong Sell should be a warning to you pikers to stay away, unless you have coin to back up the initial buys.
Also, you must understand, in a bear tape, most technicals will be bearish.
As a matter of fact, most of my stocks are ranked buy only because of the strong fundamental scores.
Essentially, as a stock gets cheaper, it’s fundies improve while the technical deteriorate. The stock become a buy when it either gets too cheap, kicking in a strong Fundie rank or the stock firms up, evening out its technical ranking.

Under normal circumstances…
American Express (AXP) would be having funding problems.
The company needs $25 billion or so of funding in the next 12 months just to stay alive.
Its 5 year bonds just traded +800 or around 10.8%, clearly not a viable option.
It can always tap the Fed’s new CP program, but the company says it can only tap about $9 billion or so.
So I guess it either has to merge or have serious problems.
Given the choice I wouldn’t buy AXP’s CP personally, but oops, I forgot, I don’t have a choice.
Note that National City (NCC) says it wants to tap TARP. I don’t want to own NCC either but, oops, I don’t have a choice there either.
