Kass: Glass Looks Half-Full Into Year-End

    By Doug Kass
    RealMoney Silver Contributor

    Aug. 28 at 8:09 a.m. EDT.

In the past, I have written about the implications of political change on the U.S. stock market.

    The S&P 500 is now down 12.7% year-to-date.

From my perch, the outlook for the remainder of 2008 seems slightly better than I expressed in late July. At that time, I suggested that the year-end S&P might end down between 10% and 15%, or about 5% better than the level it stood at on July 28, 2008.

At the current time, I believe that the outlook for equities is somewhat better than I thought a month ago, and I would (slightly) reduce my expectation for the S&P’s losses from down between 10% and 15% to down between 6% and 12%. Interestingly, this is almost exactly the same S&P forecast of down between 5% and 10% made back in January in my surprise list for 2008.

In other words, the market holds some upside but, most likely, will still be down on the year.

The key factors that I feel will influence the course of the market for the balance of the year clearly include politics, credit markets, housing, interest rates, crude oil and other measures of inflation, corporate profits, and geopolitical events.

I will expand on these influences next week but to briefly summarize the impact of these variables:

Politics. An Obama victory in November seems to have already been incorporated into share prices. My personal view is that the November election will end up being a toss up — a lot closer than many currently think.

Credit. Credit markets remain pressured (and loans are still not readily available), but the curative process of restoring capital to our financial intermediaries is growing more advanced with time.

Residential Real Estate. Housing activity and the decline in home prices — I see another 5% of price degradation over the balance of the year — seem to be undergoing a bottoming process, but any real recovery will likely be delayed into 2010, reflecting the large inventory of unsold homes, a weakening economy and a tight mortgage market.

Interest Rates. Interest rates remain low by historic standards and are not likely to change much in 2008, providing a tailwind to valuation.

Crude Oil and Inflation. I remain of the belief that inflationary pressures are abating coincident with a broadening worldwide economic slump. This factor is the primary reason why I believe there is another 5% or so upside to equities through year-end.

Corporate Profits. Profit margins are in the process of mean regressing, and expectations for corporate profits still remain too optimistic — a headwind.

Geopolitical. Always an unknown, as we recently learned with the Russia/Georgia confrontation.

You think people are gonna want a noname, nobody, whats-her-name, running the country if the old man bites the big one? Talk about no experience, the #1 complaint about Obama.

Oh, but she’s a hockey Mom. That should qualify her for running the Big Show & tangling with Russia & China. YIKES !

The market just voted by dropping a quick 1/2% on that news.

This pick has got to be a joke. Alzheimers is quickly setting in on the old man.

She runs a state. What has Obama ever run?

Her nickname is Sarah Barracuda. She’s tough. She fought against corruption in her own party and took down Murkowski. She has extremely high approval ratings in Alaska.

She’s a risky pick, but once her story is out I think (hope) she will be viewed less skeptically.

If you are a conservative, I think you will be pleased once see what she has acomplished. The good news about this election is that we will either have a woman or an black person in office. If it’s a woman, I can tell my girls, See, you can do anything. If it’s Obama (I hope not), we can finally get past all the racial crap and judge people based on their ability and intellect.

McCain would have made it less difficult had he picked Romney for those that are on the fence with Obama … Hilarians that may have gone with McCain will be more inclined to go with Obama/Biden despite the “woman factor” as with McCain the VP is truly just a heartbeat away from the presidency. Obama hands down!

Note: Definitely a Rove strategic pick (states/gender) that will backfire especially with males concerned about McCains age.

If he didn’t pick Romney, no one else brought anything to the ticket.

! I think McCain was watching that great speech last night getting drunk and said, “Fuck it. Let’s roll the dice.” Dems were saying same thing with Dan Quale and others in the past and lost!…she is hockey mom, mother of 5 children, youngest child has down syndrome…anyways, massive RISK but that’s why he he calls himself the maverick…ALSO they are trying to get some media coverage and boy are they dwarfing the speech coverage of obama…turned media on their side…and really did the experience argument work for hillary? NO so why would it work for McCain

ridge, portman, pawlenty, lieberman wouldn’t have done it. romney could have won michigan and helped him mop up west…so other than him, roll the dice! I am for it.

biden appeals to no one but extreme lefters, completely ruining his “change” platform, losing younger voters, and gaining no older voters.
Palin gains all the women voters that Obama lost for the disputes against Hillary, and somehow managed to get Hillary to try to give those votes back…
But McCain brings in, and now as it turns out, all of Hillary’s work, just brought more voters over to McCain.
Say what you want about the politics of either side, but Palin was a great pick, and is exactly what McCain needed.

I know there are plenty of people here who personally might change their vote, but face it, the majority of the population is in the baby boomer generation, voting for president. Then there’s the all the soccor moms that feel they can relate, and all the women that got all rallied up and excited about politics, and all of those younger voters that wanted “change”, were faced with the betrayal of his platform when they realized that Obama just brought over some old fart washington insider, who brings nothing more than the sam 9% approval rating politics that congress has and he’ll do plenty more of the same. Sure, that leaves some people that waiver on the issue of Obama’s lack of “experience”, that all of a sudden said, ok, now that he has an experienced VP he can do it, but on experience do you take Biden, or McCain? Biden clearly the grumpy leftist extremist, while McCain the happy senior citizen who is not afraid to stand against his party. Sure, the dems try to say how similar McCain’s voting record in Senate is to Bush, but they forget how often times Bush has no choice but to sign certain bills, and the senate reaches unanimous decisions that BOTH sides have agreed upon.

Obama shot himself in the foot, Hillary cleaned up his mess, and Palin comes and shifts all Hillary has done to her side.

I like a lot of things about Obama, but McCain has made a brilliant move here.

oh, I will say that long term the dems are winning. McCain was one of the most liberal candidates on the Republican side, and Obama is extremely liberal as is Biden. The shift continues to move towards bigger and bigger government.
Look at Bush, spending tons on getting the government involved in education. Spending more than any liberal in history. Compare him to even Reagan, or move back years before that.Look at how this country started when the president had very little involvement, the state representatives were actually able to represent, taxes didn’t exist, marijuana was legal, and much less commonly used, large federal agencies didn’t exist.

But the polls have been a lot more even lately, and I cerainly think this gives McCain a better chance

Yeah Jake …. Cuz I don’t buy into the permanent Bush inheritance tax cuts or think that payroll tax caps s/b raised to support soc sec, that makes me a democrat … When your kids get older you to will start thinking about quality of life and the fiscal burden inherited by your kids and grand kids … party on and keep voting tax cuts for rich, higher deficits and bigger tax bills for the generations to follow. Oh, and I did go to business school and have worked for S&P 500 companies, been self employed and even voted for Nixon, Reagan & Bush One … dem votes included Clinton, Gore and Kerry (even though I said he’d never get my vote during my lifetime Bush II forced my hand) … but yes I am pro middle class if that makes you happy!

Employee 8 — I would love to know the business school class you attended and still talk like a know-nothing democrat.

Do you even understand what a train wreck Soc Sec is? Why it is so? It’s simple math, really.

Did you ever take a step back and ask yourself “what the hell is an inheritance tax, anyway?”

So don’t give me the “independent” bs. You’ve been suckered like the rest, by the big Gov’t asshats.

Embrace it, don’t obfuscate it. Dems are not for the “middle class,” they want two classes — “the Governors, and the Governed” and you cannot have that second class unless you’ve got them strapped to your chest with gov’t cheese chains. Good luck with all that.
