As for the market:
I was up nearly 4% today, thanks to my long positions in banks, [[UYG]] , [[RKH]] . My energy plays took a step backward. But, I was able to knuckle my way in at the lower levels today.
Cognizant of possible light volume, end of August trickery, I sold out of my bank longs and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. [[LEH]] . I don’t want to press my luck, with the economy at a grind here—only growing 3.3% for the Qt. (rolling eyes).
My energy positions are bountiful. I will likely take some off the table tomorrow, ahead of the long weekend. There are so many short positions out there; I expect they will get squeezed.
Also, I like Equinix, Inc. [[EQIX]] , Southern Copper Corporation (USA) [[PCU]] and all of the military stocks, including Northrop Grumman Corporation [[NOC]] , General Dynamics Corporation [[GD]] , AeroVironment, Inc. [[AVAV]] and Lockheed Martin Corporation [[LMT]] .
However, at the present, “The Fly” is into pressing his luck, via egregious long bets on Western Refining, Inc. [[WNR]] , [[DIG]] , [[IEO]] and Arena Resources, Inc. [[ARD]] .

There is no doubt about it. Jeff had an awesome site that was getting a ton of hits, traffic, and community involvment. Then, he goes an starts TA and leaves everyone who didnt join holding the bag. If you really think about it, it was a horrible business move. Cut off more than half your visitors to profit off few. He went for the short money (monthly fee) when he could have developed OA even more and sold it one day for real money. Now, he leaves this leftover,quiet ghost town thinking people who dont join his 300 only pay service (which isnt close to sold out) will somehow stick around and make/keep the site great like it was before. It will never happen. People have many options when it comes to content. (free and pay). And frankly, how could you expect them to stick around.
If your 300 dont stick around and you cant keep adding new subscribers, your done. YOU took everyone that visited OAand contributed on the tread for GRANTED, the community that was. It wasnt just about you and your insights, it was about trading ideas with regulars. Like it or not, you will never have it again on this site (OA), and you will never have it on the new site (TA). because 3/4 of the family just moved out of town. Blogs are only as good as the traffic and involment of everyone. Pay sites are only as good as your total subscribers, which my friend, you will struggle to get and then hope they decided to stay. Meanwhile the other 3/4 dont join the pay service will find another home (site)

There is generally a good move in the market from Sept/Oct till the end of the election year … developing?
Barrons also confirmed in a recent article that the best gains are made from the 4th qtr of the 2nd calender year of the elected president, regardless of party, into the 3rd qtr of the 4th year. This period provides the bulk of the move up or about 31% of the entire 4 yr gain of 33%!
But if you believe in stock picking by party you might recognize some of the picks in this column and see a trend in how The Fly has hedged the presidential race (though he seems to be leaning toward McCain based on his pro oil/defense holdings) via GD vs EQIX, LMT vs Closeout Fin’l Shorts & Long WB, RIG vs IEO with NOV covering both oil & gas thus a hedge of it’s own … waiting on his position in healthcare (Mrk vs Hum?) …. also developing.
