Day rates for deep water rigs are through the ceiling. Trading under 9x 2009 numbers, I feel the stock can hit $200 by October, no problem.
Frankly, there are very few stocks “The Fly” buys or shorts, without fear of being wrong. Shorting the “Five Reverse Horsemen” is easy and so is being long “RIG-Daddy” aka “short seller widow maker.”

I have been on the Transocean (RIG:NYSE) bandwagon for quite some time but recent news suggest that shares still have long-term potential.
On Friday, RIG announced a 5-year contract with BP (BP:NYSE) for one of its semisubmersibles with a potential value of over $1 billion. This equates to a dayrate of $580,000, a record for a fixed contract with at least a five-year term. The going dayrates for deepwater rigs with three-year terms (or less) are more than $600,000.
Today, RIG signed a 10-year drilling contract (with an option to extend the contract for an additional 10 years) with subsidiaries of Petrobras (PBR:NYSE) and Mitsui with expected revenue of $1.7 billion. Total capital costs will be incurred by Petrobras and Mitsui and the new build will have RIG’s patented dual-activity drilling technology, which will provide an additional 5% royalty payment to the company.
RIG has the best technology in the space — which was made clear last month when one of its rigs set the world record for the longest extended-reach well ever drilled at 40,320 feet. There is tremendous potential to find large new oil reserves in deep water, and RIG’s drillships are being contracted quicker than can be built.
I don’t see this trend slowing anytime soon.
