I try to segregate the artist from the art. One cannot expect that just because someone is endowed with a massive amount of talent that they are somehow superhuman — or even proficient — in any other sphere of human life. Much more likely they are schlubs. Very few real Renaissance Men/Women around anymore, and the ones who style themselves that way are often frauds.
I cringe when I hear Babs Streisand’s political views, I throw up in my mouth whenever Sean Penn makes “a statement.” I have trouble coming to terms with Stevens’ later-life decisions, but I hold nothing against these people when they are caterwauling for stage or screen, as that is where their true talent lies, and that is where they are best enjoyed.
What’s the alternative, anyway? As much as I love Charleton Heston and Clint Eastwood’s oevres, the organgutans start to get wearisome after a while.
