Why Too Much Data Disables Your Decision Making

“Quick, think back to a major decision. You know, the kind that compelled you to read everything on a topic and lead you to spend hours devouring every last scrap of data.

How’d that work out for you?

We like to think that more information drives smarter decisions; that the more details we absorb, the better off we’ll be. It’s why we subscribe to Google Alerts, cling to our iPhone, and fire up our TweetDeck.

Knowledge, we’re told, is power. But what if our thirst for data is actually holding us back? What if obsessing over information actually reduces the quality of our decisions?

That’s the question raised by Princeton and Stanford University psychologists in a fascinating study titled On the Pursuit and Misuse of Useless Information.

Their experiment was simple. Participants were divided into two groups. Group 1 read the following:

Imagine that you are a loan officer at a bank reviewing the mortgage application of a recent college graduate with a stable, well-paying job and a solid credit history. The applicant seems qualified, but during the routine credit check you discover that for the last three months the applicant has not paid a $5,000 debt to his charge card account,

Do you approve or reject the mortgage application?….”

5 Ways to Reduce Identity Tracking

“There’s a well-known saying, “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.” But it’s getting increasingly harder to stay completely anonymous on the Web, as a Page One article in Saturday’s Wall Street Journal shows.

So how do you avoid having your browsing linked to your real identity online? It’s pretty difficult, assuming you want to use the Internet like a normal person. But there are a few steps you can take….”

$FB Quietly Moves to Siphon TV Ad Sales

“Facebook’s management has recently adopted a new mantra: that Facebook’s audience is the equivalent of three Super Bowls every day. COO Sheryl Sandberg said it on the Q3 2012 earnings call. And vp/global marketing solutions Carolyn Everson said it at our Ignition 2012 conference in New York recently.

It turns out that this mantra is a clue to how Facebook intends to start stealing the advertising dollars that currently go to television. Facebook has made three recent moves that all point to an attack on the ad dollars that previously went to TV:

  • Facebook is now the second biggest server of online video, behind YouTube. Although Facebook is a distant second to YouTube, that’s still huge progress. Facebook now shows more video than Yahoo!, VevoMicrosoftAOL and everyone else.
  • Facebook has a partnership with Nielsen, “

Euro Declines as ECB Majority Supports Rate Cut

“The euro declined against most of its 16 major peers after a majority of European Central Bank members indicated support for an interest-rate cut if the economy doesn’t pick up.

The shared currency fell to the lowest in more than a week against the dollar after the Bundesbank lowered its 2013 forecast for economic expansion in Germany, following the ECB’s euro-area downgrade. The yen briefly extended gains after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hitTokyo, fueling haven demand for the Japanese currency. The Dollar Index rose for a third day before a report economists said would show U.S. companies hired fewer workers in November…”

Leave a Bad Angie’s List/ Yelp Review–GET SUED: $ANGI, $YELP

Better think twice before you slam a business with a bad review on Yelp – one Virginia woman is being sued for it.
Jane Perez was slapped with a $750,000 lawsuit by Dietz Development after she publicly logged complaints about construction work the building contractor performed on her home.
In her write-ups on the popular business review sites Yelp and Angie’s List, Perez accused the company of damaging her house, trespassing and stealing jewelry.
‘Bottom line,’ she wrote on Angie’s List. ‘Do not put yourself through this nightmare of a contractor.’
Perez is only the latest online critic to find herself in court over negative comments post online.
In 2009, a San Francisco man was sued by a chiropractor after he posted a Yelp review accusing the business of over-charging him. That suit was settled out of court.
A Chicago plastic surgeon sued three women in 2010 after they wrote online accusations that he gave them disfigured and misshapen breasts after surgery.
In September, a Pilates studio in Virginia sued two Yelp reviewers who complained that the business smelled like mildew and that the staff was unfriendly

Seriously, Can You Dispute These Claims ?

What will man not do to garner power and money ?

Being curious does not make one anything.

Asking questions is only part of our nature.

Being afraid is  defense mechanism that can be broken.

John McAfee Blogs About His WAR Against the Country of Belize

I have retained Telésforo Guerra, former Attorney General for the country of Guatemala, to assist in my fight against the Government of Belize. Mr. Guerra is one of most prominent attorneys in Guatemala and, as a shared border neighbor, is well versed in the intricate system of corruption with the Belizean Government. Mr. Guerra is Samantha’s uncle.

I have, in the past three weeks, had no contact with the American Embassy in Belize. Since many employees of the Embassy are Belizean nationals, I did not feel safe in communicating with them. Now that I am in Guatemala, and in a safe harbor, I will reach out to the Embassy here.

To the Prime Minister of Belize I make the following offer: I will agree to meet you in a neutral country to discuss our mutual issues. It is entirely possible that you have little or no knowledge of the level of corruption being propagated throughout every branch of your government. I will turn over to you thousands of hours of video and audio as proof, providing that we meet as gentlemen and are mutually convinced of our honesty.

To the family of Gregory Faul: I had nothing to do with his death. I have lost five close family members in my 67 years and I know your suffering.

To the Belizean Police: I will answer any questions that you may have over the phone. If I am indeed merely wanted for questioning, this should suffice.

To my supporters: I have posted many short posts over the past three days during the setup and execution of my exit from Belize. The information was intended for my pursuers. I regret that it may have confused or alarmed many of you. I hope you will consider the circumstances and forgive me.

To my freinds: I will be in touch soon. I have not slept for 24 hours. I am in non-stop meetings and strategizing our next steps. I will call and email you soon. I love you all.

John Mcafee’s Bosshood Continues: His Body Double Arrested in Mexico

Mr McAfee’s arrival in Guatemala comes after days of confusion and secrecy about his whereabouts. His official blog initially claimed he had been captured at the border with Mexico, something the police denied.

But a later blog post by Mr McAfee claimed that the man arrested in Mexico was his ‘double’ who had deliberately been arrested in an attempt to fool the authorities into thinking they had arrested Mr McAfee and thus aiding his escape.

Mr McAfee’s new location was inadvertently revealed by journalists from Vice magazine who have spent five days with him. They posted a photograph of him online but failed to remove data which revealed he was in Guatemala.

Initially Mr McAfee claimed that he had doctored the information, again to fool the authorities, but later admitted he was in Guatemala.
