Huge Bank Robbery Scores Are in a Bear Market

via WSJ.com

Associated Press
One of two armed bank-robbery suspects is handcuffed after surrendering on April 27, nearly five hours into a standoff with police in Springboro, Ohio.

When someone asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks, he famously replied, “Because that’s where the money is.”

That might have been true in the 1930s, but it no longer seems to apply.

A new study of data on bank robberies, published in the June 2012 issue of the statistical journal Significance, finds that bank robbers don’t get much swag when they pull off a heist. In the U.K., the average haul is just £12,707 per person (roughly $19,767), or less than six months of the average wage for full-time workers there.

‘GAME OF THRONES’ PRODUCERS Sorry for Putting George W. Bush’s Head on a Spike

0614_game_of_thrones
HBO and the honchos behind “Game of Thrones” have issued an official apology for putting George W. Bush‘s head on a spike in an episode during Season 1.

You may have heard … producers recently revealed they used a Dubya mask as the base for a prop of a decapitated head … .which actually appeared on the show.

Show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss insisted the move was NOT a political statement … but an honest mistake.

The two released a joint statement saying, “We use a lot of prosthetic body parts on the show: heads, arms, etc. We can’t afford to have these all made from scratch, especially in scenes where we need a lot of them, so we rent them in bulk. After the scene was already shot, someone pointed out that one of the heads looked like George W. Bush.”

EGYPT’S MILITARY SEIZES CONTROL OF COUNTRY

Egypt’s highest court declares parliament invalid

[Updated at 10:47 a.m. ET] Egypt’s highest court on Thursday declared the country’s parliament invalid and cleared the way for a member of former President Hosni Mubarak’s regime to run in a presidential election runoff this weekend.

The Supreme Constitutional Court ruled that parliament must be dissolved, state TV reported. An Egyptian constitutional law expert told CNN that following the court’s decision, a political decision would be made about whether to dissolve parliament.

Following the ruling, Egypt’s interim military rulers claimed to have full legislative control of government. Parliament had been in session for just over four months.

The court had ruled that about one-third of Egypt’s members of parliament were invalid because they ran as independents and later joined party blocs.

Manhattan Financial Services Contraction Weighs Heavily on REITs

Manhattan financial services contraction weighs heavily on REITs

Investment trust executives report no growth, no attrition in sector

June 13, 2012 12:00PM
By Adam Pincus

From left: Wendy Silverstein and Michael Fascitelli, Vornado Realty Trust’s executive vice president and CEO, respectively.

The shrinking of Manhattan’s once-robust financial services footprint is dampening the mood among top real estate executives who spoke yesterday during an annual real estate investment trust conference in Midtown. While the CEOs and presidents of firms such as SL Green Realty, Vornado Realty Trust and Boston Properties, generally said the cutbacks had not hurt their own companies, they acknowledged the weak financial services industry hobbled the overall leasing market.

Those REITs were among the more than 100 real estate investment trusts that were scheduled to make public comments and take questions from the audience yesterday and today at the annual conference known as REITWeek, held this year from June 12-14 at the Hilton New York in Midtown. The event is hosted by the Washington, D.C.-based National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.

How the Oklahoma City Thunder Became the Hottest Ticket in NBA

BY DARREN ROVELL
When the Seattle Supersonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder, there likely wasn’t a single person who would have predicted that the team would become the hottest ticket in the NBA.

But that’s exactly what has happened.

Tickets on the secondary market have soared for the Thunder all season and the NBA Finals is no exception.

StubHub reports that tickets to Game 1 and Game 2 on Tuesday and Thursday in Oklahoma City are selling for an average of $708 and $827 a ticket, respectively. Compare that to Miami, whose Game 3 and 4 on Saturday and Tuesday are selling for an average of $617 and $472 a ticket.

FLASH: Asian Stocks Continue to Slide

Asian stocks slid on Monday as disappointing U.S. jobs data added to concerns over a slowing Chinese economy and a deepening euro zone debt crisis.

The flight from risk also weighed on bonds, with the benchmark Japanese government bond yield dropping to a nine-year low. The 10-year JGB yield fell 2 basis points to 0.790 percent, its lowest level since July 2003.

The FTSE CNBC Asia 100 Index [.FTFCNBCA  5583.19    -75.04  (-1.33%)], which measures markets across Asia, slipped 0.6 percent.

Japan’s Nikkei average [.N225  8262.82    -177.43  (-2.1%)] shed 1.9 percent at the open to 8,278.65, while the broader Topix shed 1.9 percent to 695.67.

Nomura shares tumbled 4 percent after it replaced the head of institutional sales at its core securities unit, following an escalating investigation by regulators into its suspected role in insider trading.

Nintendo fell 1.5 percent despite it announcing its much anticipated successor to its Wii games console, the Wii U, will come with an online social network, dubbed Miiverse, to connect gamers.

Seoul shares tanked 2.8 percent at the open, down for a fourth straight session after weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs data aggravated fears of a global economic slowdown.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) [.KS11  1792.12    -42.39  (-2.31%)   ] fell 51.67 points to 1,783.5 points.

Forget waterboarding, Guantanamo Bay prisoners are now being tortured by BIG BIRD — at least according to a new documentary released by Al Jazeera.

According to the doc — called “Songs of War” — detainees at the U.S. Naval base have been forced to wear headphones blaring Sesame Street music on repeat for hours or days on end … to break their will (start at 2:00).

WAS THE NBA DRAFT LOTTERY RIGGED FOR LEAGUE-OWNED TEAM TO WIN?

By Matt Brooks

Every spring, the conspiracy theorists try to poke holes in the NBA’s annual Ping Pong ball party. From the New York Knicks landing the top pick and franchise-savior Patrick Ewing to the Cleveland Cavaliers coming up lucky in the wake of LeBron James’ departure, the NBA draft lottery winner seems to be the team with the best story.

Last night was no different, and, predictably, talk of the lottery being rigged is drowning out the early mock draft frenzy.

The NBA-owned New Orleans Hornets earned the right to the No. 1 pick — which most assume will be Kentucky forward Anthony Davis — despite going in with thefourth-best chance of winningamong the 14 teams. The Hornets had a 13.7-percent chance compared to Charlotte’s 25-percent chance, Washington’s 19.9-percent chance and Cleveland’s 13.8-percent chance.

Now, after New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson assured NBA Commissioner David Stern he would keep the team in the Big Easy, he has already begun to cash in on his $338 million investment.

Coincidence?
