that’s been a suspicion of mine since i drove 3500 miles in Spain back in 2000.
My guess is we need to spend those petrol dollars to have the house of Saud buy back our bonds.

here is a f’d up story.
guy goes to buy a ford pick up.
drives it brand new off the lot.
suddenly he realizes he has driven 500 miles and the gas gauge is only off by a 1/4.
long story short he has the dealership check the truck 3x and he has driven over 1500 miles.
On the third inspection they told him we made a mistake. An experimental carburetor was accidentally put on the truck.
Ford offers him a free lease with a new exchange every 3 years for a total of three exchanges if he signs a document not to speak of his experience for a minimum of 10 years.

they haven’t put carburetors on cars in years. Do you mean a new fuel injector system?

        goose,
this story was told to me 10+ years ago.
so i assume it is carburetors.
i was twice removed from the gentlemen who experienced this…

Probably a carburetor, because it’s an urban myth that predates fuel-injected passenger vehicles.

And the part about an engine not being allowed in the US because it’s pollutants per gallon are too high is bogus. Simply false.

    Emissions regulations apply to vehicles.

The guy should quit whining and buy the legal 80+mpg version in the US.

The couple that saves together stays together: Couple sets fuel efficiency record in Passat TDI

John and Helen Taylor love to drive, but hate to refuel. Then again, they are the world’s most fuel-efficient couple, so that should come as no surprise. When the Taylors learned that the world record for most miles covered on a single tank of diesel was 1526.6 miles—set in a Volkswagen Passat 1.6 BlueMotion diesel, by the way—they knew that they had to try to break it. On May 5, they did just that in a stock 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE TDI Clean Diesel equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.

Over the course of three days, the couple drove 1626.1 miles from Houston, Texas to Sterling, Virginia, all on a single tank of diesel fuel. According to our calculator, that’s an unbelievable 84.1 miles per gallon, breaking the old record by almost 100 miles.
