A Word or Two About Conspiracy Theories

If everything is a conspiracy, then nothing is. Do you understand what that means? If we are told everything is a lie, then by default, the lie is also a lie and cannot be trusted. The internet has become a breeding ground for wild eyed conspiracy theories, researched using non-scientific methods by people more interested in becoming the next Alex Jones, than enlightening people of the dangers ahead.

Case in point, this video.

Take 30 minutes and watch it. You will find some of the information to be credible, which should raise serious questions as to the actual events that took place on in Sandyhook on Dec. 14th. But the guy who made the video went bazerko, claiming the whole scene was one giant hollywood set, filled with actors and props.

Pardon me for being so brazenly forthright–because I really want to use some fouled language right now– but the creator of that video is a jackass.

See, the government is a lot of things, but competent is not one of them. I do believe they’re corrupt and commit many heinous acts of violence to stay in power, as every government has done since the beginning of time. But I find it very hard to believe that whole towns can be part of some scheme to strip Americans of their 2nd amendment rights.

There comes a point when the conspiracy theory itself starts to sound like a conspiracy to hide what really happened. This is one of those occasions.

UPDATE

Anderson Cooper addresses conspiracy theories.

I saw this the other day. Some of the stuff shown is hard to explain and as you said, credible. I’m not into conspiracies. I don’t believe in any of them, but this one is pretty damn close to making me believe.

I know. Frankly, I find it to be very distasteful that he is calling into question the grieving of the parents.

People cope with tragedy in many ways. Smiling on the outside doesn’t mean you’re not dying on the inside.

In psychology, isn’t laughing a sign of insecurity and nervousness? Then it should definitely be expected that he would laugh after being shocked with a tragedy like this. I can’t stand these conspiracist clowns who spit on the graves of the victims and slap the victims’ family members in the face..

The assault weapon in the trunk was obviously Lanza’s backup. You can see the LEO racking the charge handle back and forth on the right side of the weapon which means it is a Ruger 10/22, not the AR-15 that was used in the shooting.

Having said that Holder denied knowing about Fast and Furious until he was threatened with jail time. Imagine allowing 2000 rifles to cross into Mexico just so 0bama could say “A-HA we told you those assault rifles were mean.”
This proves the “govt is incompetent theory” forwarded by The Fly.

conspiracy theories are fun. its like an archaeological dig.

in this case you must question eye witness testimony, police scanners claims of two unsubs, and finding the long gun in the trunk.

Does not prove anything, but is highly suspect. Furthermore, why are these facts hidden or not discussed by media?

I did not watch the video but there is a cottage industry dedicated to these people who spin a theory with seemingly believable proof. After they garner enough believers, here comes the books etc. The same deal happened with the “Truthers” and the “Birthers”. All set in motion to part people from their money.

I would agree what some of the information in this video is seems credible… but I can not get my head around a motive for the government to manipulate this event.

I know for a fact this tragedy occurred. I have deep ties to Connecticut. A relative of mine is very good friends with a teacher at Sandy Hook who took a personal day that Friday and lost her entire class. In addition, I have a friend who works with two people that lost their children.

I’m disgusted that anyone would say this horrific attack was fake. A friend’s granddaughter was killed there and their grief is very real.

Part of what leads to this BS and nonsense like the 9-11 truther idiots is the media ignorance of most everything coupled with their need to pretend to be experts. So, real time footage and comments end up not matching reality once the dust settles and rest of the facts come out.

So why were Facebook accounts and school massacre relief funds set up days before the shooting? That is quite curious.

And since the assault rifle was in the trunk of the car, why the furor over them now?

Not to hijack your post, but I want to take a moment to publicly acknowledge the loss of Aaron Swartz, a true freedom fighter in every sense of the phrase. He sought to expose the gov’t for cracking down on Internet freedom and a whole host of electronic data issues, and they drove him to suicide because of it. God bless.

Freedom fighter my ass. This guy broke the law, stole property, faced punishment, and then hung himself – not much ‘fighting’. I find it odd that people are trying to turn him into a martyr. And nobody ‘drove’ him to suicide.

“See, the government is a lot of things, but competent is not one of them.”

Dr. Fly hit the nail on the head. This is exactly why I believe none of the conspiracy-oriented theories attributed to the government are false: the US government is not capable of conducting such an exercise successfully.

If any of you believe some of the conspiracy crap on the internet, please understand that with great power comes great audacity and folly. People in power will only try something controversial if they believe they can get away with it, like with Obama and his recent gun-control pronouncements.

And, ironically related, Eric Holder and his Fast and Furious program.

    Hopefully you get my point.

The coroner, while acting goofy, insisted that the shootings were done with a BushMaster.

Maybe they were done with handguns and he was not able to discern.

Then no one in the media followed up ?

It sounded to me like the coroner wasn’t really doing his job that day and didn’t want to admit that he had no fucking clue because his underlings were busy examining the bodies while he snacked on donuts and prepared for his tv limelight interviews. I really get the impression from his answers that he is BS’ing and hiding the fact that he either has no idea how to answer certain questions or can’t remember what he wrote down about it earlier.

I don’t understand this type of thinking: “You will find some of the information to be credible, which should raise serious questions as to the actual events that took place”.

You won’t find a chaotic and traumatic event where there aren’t inconsistencies, errors, puzzling facts, contradictions, etc. in the physical evidence and in the statements from those at the event, responding to the event, and investigating the event.

Conspiracy crackpots and frauds exploit these tidbits to create doubts about the official story and to tie some of the tidbits together as evidence for some nutty revision of what happened.

If you find the theories “somewhat credible”, you have allowed yourself to be manipulated. If you subject the conspiracy theories to any scrutiny, they fall apart.

The only part of the story that is suspect is the single shooter.

To believe in everything that is printed is equally dangerous as the person who doubts all. I tend to approach things with a bit more cynicism than most and usually form opinions irrespective of news and Internet rumors. They are my own opinions: therefore, I am never manipulated as you so in eloquently stated.

I think the media promotes (grants more air time), for the more odd ball theories in order to discredit the theories that are more believable.

The stories you remember are the completely outrageous ones, which makes you want to lump all theories into the “Bullshit” folder in your brain.

I just finished jury duty today on a criminal case, and we ended up in a 7-5 deadlock. Photographic evidence of injuries verified as real by multiple witnesses including police was discarded by half of the group as not being believable evidence of anything. In fact at least one juror, a former university professor, discounted *all* the witnesses as well as the photos as not credible for various vague reasons. Mental illness a problem in this country? Conspiracy theories seem to thrive excessively? Look around you. At least half the people you see now are incapable of applying the rational analysis of definitive evidence to arrive at a conclusion about something. The only thing that could cause such a distinctly specific and widespread mental incapacity is that the government is conducting mind control operations on us with HAARP, or maybe chemtrails. Seriously though, the jury experience was pretty shocking.
