Leveraging Information

As humans, you have limitations, specifically with retention of information. Back in the olde [sic] days, men in silk ties would pay others for insider information, hoping to make out on the next takeover play. Although that practice is still alive and well, it’s really not necessary any longer. Things are moving so fast that to risk your freedom and career over a singular event is outright ludicrous.

I’ve always been obsessed with leveraging information. I believe in the notion that what one can do, 10,000 can do 10,000x better. So, with regards to stocks, it’s a no brainer to harness the power of collective thinking and try to make money from it. That was the original mission statement for The PPT.

The current version of PPT is able to decipher both fundamental and technical data, cross reference dozens of different data points, and give the user a list of stocks to choose from. Also, we are able to analyze the historical accuracy of the algorithm, per stock, to let the user know when he should be paying attention or playing a game of frisbee with the dog. Full transparency. Some stocks fall through the cracks, other stocks are owned by The PPT, with regards to when to buy and sell.

In addition to that, we have company profile search tools, alongside user generated note searches, that enable the user to quickly identify stocks based on description (i.e., “fat”, “cancer”, “coffee”).

In the next iteration of The PPT, I endeavor to expand the algorithm to analyze investor behavior, all using information available on the internet. For example: I want to analyze correlations between certain keywords and price action. Additionally, I intend to develop tools that will quickly analyze the price action of XYZ, with volume, on an intra-day level, in order to identify high percentage day trades.

None of what I am saying is ground breaking news or innovative beyond belief. The big firms have been using software like this for awhile. However, to my knowledge, it’s never been offered, affordably, to small plebs surfing the web. I am always interested in leveling the playing field.

If you are serious about trading or investing, you cannot do it alone, unless of course you have a fail proof system. This is not a pitch for my stuff: these are my beliefs. If you want to broaden your horizon to ideas and methods that can increase your chances of success, exponentially, you need to leverage the flow of information in your favor.

If you guessed price of Silver you would be correct. Remember when $34 was expensive? Is $UUP going to $15?

I am always interested in leveling the playing field……..or in other words, “I have an axe to grind”?
Maybe with a former associate, business partner or employer. Or maybe you just enjoy hating GS as much as i do for what they and their ilk have manifested upon the entire world…

To improve forecasting, one idea I have been using is in depth research on the holders of certain stocks. Finding the weak hands or money management firms that may have a high concentration in a certain area and tend to be shanken out easily at the first sign if trouble.

When I first joined up to the PPT and I hadn’t been trading too long at that point, this is what I listened to every single morning before opening bell.

I know a lot of people don’t like it, but to me this is Fly, CA, Jake and all the other bloggers out their doing their stuff.

As a side note, I once tended bar in Oklahoma for a while and my boss played “Bad Moon Rising” every single night before we opened. I never got it, but I guess it meant something to him. His wife said he watched “American Warewolf in London every night before he came to work, too. LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BmEGm-mraE

” every single night before we opened. I still can’t figure out why. LOL)

It’s about people perfecting their craft and then bringing it to 10 thousands of people more. It’s about synergy and energy.

Every time I listen to that vid I get excited, even though the lyrics say “don’t get excited”, and I know that is what Fly is talking about.

And when people get excited, they bring their best game.

I am having trouble because it keeps redirecting me back to the password after it asks for my payment method. I think it is because I used to be a member. Maybe I’ll try at the library tomorrow. It could be that my laptop is a piece of crap.

I do ask that we be allowed to choose our own passwords, as I used to get frustrated with that in the past, trying to remember the computer generated one

And Good GAWD, the price has gone up.

    Nah, just kidding.

I would love to be able to hit an “earnings” tab and pull up say, all of tomorrows companies that have earnings coming out (or three days from now, next week, etc) and then be able to narrow down these companies by daily volume, market cap, etc,

just some way of narrowing down by key criteria (or narrowing out all trash) from the mound of symbols per day one has to manually filter thru to quickly get to the types of compaines one would be interested in following (especially symbols/companies one does not know about at the time but might be of interest if popped into this type of generated list).

    just a thought

Here is a screen I use. Needless to say the screen has to be updated every night…

Companies are set to report within the next 7 days.
Negative price action over the last 5 days.
Minimum price and volume criteria of = $5 and = 100,000 shares traded (avg. 90-day volume)
The stocks have a buy recommendation

    Nice post Fly.

Couldn’t agree more. An investor can no longer participate without the use or access to an algo. I guess fundamental investing is a thing of the past.

A market that depends on information and speed instead of using earnings and fundamentals is something that I am not sure I want to invest in anymore.

I wonder how many plebs will eventually just walk away from the game because they have no chance. Scary shit.

I don’t know, because it’s been my experience that earnings and fundamentals still bring the best returns. I still use that as my basis for picking stocks, and they still are the ones that perform the best. But even then, there are so many companies out there, and so much info that picking them is a daunting task.

But even then, there are the stocks that the market is favoring more than others, and on certain days, in any given industry.

So, bringing together the few stocks I am “intimately” familiar with, and if you do the same, and if you bring your knowledge of your industry along with your stocks, and every one else does the same…well, I guess we have an advantage, then.

The Fly is undeniably a really great trader and stock picker, but his call on selling silver was a definite whiff at bat (money printing by governments around the world to buy their own debt, middle east uncertainty and outright chaos etc.)

Sometimes selling early and missing out can be worse than picking a losing trade.

Interestingly the number of comments recently on Sen. Cementhead’s blog have been through the roof! Maybe there is a certain wisdom to the crowd.
