So……..Methinks a little discussion regarding BP is in order……
Doing a little reading this AM seems to repeatedly unearth the fact that this is not an oil “spill” per se……..in the normal reference to such an event. A spill would be defined as a fixed amount of crude that has been dumped, tipped over, leaked or otherwise let lose on the environment. What we have here is an unlimited amount (at least until the reservoir runs empty) that will continue to puke out enormous volumes of crude until such a time as it can be capped, plugged or captured in some way.
The various scenarios I came across show that any such as solution is currently weeks and more likely months away. Let’s say for the sake of expediency that it takes 80 days to get this thing under control. Various current estimates place the “leak” in the reservoir at 5000bbl /day. That’s a loss of income totaling 5000x$82/bblx80days = $32,800,000. Chicken feed for BP. It won’t even wiggle their bottom line.
The huge ? is the environmental damage this holocaust will unleash. Estimates run into the 1/2-1 billion $$ / day in losses to the various GOM economies ranging from fishing to tourism. Based on the fact that the current assumptions confine the slick to the upper gulf region, those figures could be correct. I think they are mortally optimistic. Factor in a Cat 3 or 4 blowing into the gulf whilst the blowout is still going strong and you have just unleashed a high potential for Armageddon from the Florida Keys to Corpus Christi Texas.
So what if we assign a number that says for every day the blowout continues, it costs BP $1B in cleanup costs, payments for lost revenue to local economies, the drilling of a “shutoff well” etc, etc, ad nauseum? Take our assumption that the oil continues unabated for the 80 days referred to above. We have a tidy sum of $80,000,000,000. Given that BP’s total market cap is roughly $160 billion, the question becomes whether they, or any company can take a hit of 1/2 their total net worth and still survive? My gut tells me no. Unequivocally no. My conclusion based on very sketchy/stretchy current information is that we can look for BP to go to $0.00 Time and the influence of mother nature will tell.

Actually big storms or hurricanes may help. There was a huge oil leak from another rig in Mexico back in the very late 1970’s. Apparently some big storms kind of churned up the oil and helped dissipate it making the damage much less than expected. Guess it depends on which way the wind blows.
New estimates are putting the flow at 25,000 bbl/day. The Gulf is screwed and so is BP unless they get the thing contained in a very short time. just sayin’……………….Holy shit man! 25,000 bbl/day
1150s looks like a good place for the market to take a stand but if that fails, next stop is probably the 1090s which is roughly the 10% that the Fly was looking for.

I know a young person who has read a couple books and want’s to practice trading stocks, but has only 500 to 1000 dollars to trade.
Does anyone know how he might do this without wasting way too much on commissions, etc? Is it possible to do this online with charts and shit at this low a dollar figure?

Try Scottrade (for beginners) or TOS. They may require a minimum opening fee though.
Not scottrade. Maybe TOS. Need really really cheap commissions, like less than 3 bucks per trade. Not sure what the minimum is at IB. Zecco? There are some other cheap brokerages.

Not the fly…AUY reports after the close on Monday so who the heck knows what company will say…using fibo (mix of levels and ma’s) support is at 8.62 and resistance at 11.59. Normally Gold likes to run up leading into the ECB and BOE meetings this Thursday…imho, monday it will probably run up…so risk/reward won’t be there to “play the earnings”, plus China comes back from May Day on Tuesday so Monday Party Day could get sorta ugly maybe, esp if RBA doesn’t raise rates.
