Comments »Scientists Get Closer to the Higgs Boson AKA the God Particle
“(Reuters) – Scientists said they have gotten even closer to proving the existence of the elusive Higgs boson, the so-called “God particle” that supplies mass to matter and would complete Albert Einstein’s theory of the universe.
Analyzing data from some 500 trillion sub-atomic particle collisions designed to emulate conditions right after the Big Bang when the universe was formed, scientists at Fermilab outside Chicago produced some 1,000 Higgs particles over a decade of work.
“Unfortunately, this hint is not significant enough to conclude that the Higgs boson exists,” said Rob Roser, a physicist at Fermilab, near Chicago, in explaining the findings being presented on Wednesday at a conference in La Thuille, Italy.
The image scientists have of the short-lived Higgs particles, which almost immediately decay into other particles, is still slightly “fuzzy,” Roser said.
The probability that what physicists detected is not a Higgs boson and is instead a statistical fluke was 1 in 250, which is near the threshold of 1 in 740 that physics has set to establish proof of a sub-atomic particle’s existence.
The hunt for the Higgs boson is significant because it would show the existence of an invisible field thought to permeate the entire universe. The Higgs field was posited in the 1960s by British scientist Peter Higgs as the way that matter obtained mass after the universe was created during the Big Bang.
According to the theory, it was the agent that made the stars, planets and life possible by giving mass to most elementary particles. Some gave it the nickname the “God particle.”
Comments »Never Before Seen 1991 Video Of A Harvard Protest Shows Barack Obama Defending A Radical Law Professor
Andrew Kaczynski of Buzzfeed discovered this little gem of a video, in which then-law student Barack Obama spoke at a protest in favor of Harvard Law Professor Derrick Bell.
Kaczynski explains what the protest was all about.
Bell was the first black tenured professor at the school, and a pioneer of “critical race theory,” which insisted, controversially, on reading issues of race and power into legal scholarship. His protest that spring was occasioned by Harvard’s denial of tenure to a black woman professor, Regina Austin, at a time when only three of the law school’s professors were black and only five women. He told Harvard he would take a leave of absence — a kind of academic strike — “until a woman of color is offered and accepted a tenured position on this faculty,” and he launched a hunger strike to dramatize his point.
Obama was a major figure on campus, the first black president of the Law Review. Some friends, in a prescient joke, just referred to him as “the first black president.” He had a reputation as a conciliatory figure, not a confrontational one like Bell.
Probably the most amazing thing about it is the fact that Obama’s speech-giving style is so little changed since his days at Harvard. Obama has the same soaring cadence, dramatic pauses, and light-hearted jokes that you find in almost every one of his speeches. ”

The New iPad Debuted @ $499
Wells Fargo Considers Closing Branches to Trim Cost
CNET’s Take on the New $AAPL iPad
via CNET.com
The iPad‘s new screen specs are impressive.
(Credit: Donald Bell/CNET)
That’s really all you need to know about the new iPad. That, and a reminder that pricing still starts at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model, with 4G starting at $629.
Forget all of the minor tweaks and incremental updates Apple has made to its third-generation tablet. The faster processor, the upgrade to 4G data, the improved camera–it’s all housekeeping. It’s the stuff it had to do. It’s the stuff any manufacturer could have done.
Now, doubling the iPad’s screen resolution to a 2048×1536 resolution that exceeds any current tablet or laptop–that’s a move only Apple has the scale and industry muscle to pull off. At this point, if Apple decides that the next iPad will be made from unicorn tears, I wouldn’t bet against it.
But in this pre-unicorn era, we’re stuck with the new iPad and a design that is virtually indistinguishable from 2011’s iPad 2. The tablet’s glass and aluminum construction is still 9.5 inches tall and 7.31 inches wide. Thickness is now 0.37 inch, weighing in at 1.5 pound.
Related stories
This design is not exactly identical to the iPad 2’s, though. Apple knocked the camera quality up to 5-megapixel with 1080p video recording and backside illumination. Apple has yet to release spec information on the front-facing camera, if it’s been changed at all.
The screen
Remember the first time you saw an HD television? You were probably excited about the future but also a little sad that your current TV’s days were numbered. For tablet fans, a glance at the iPad’s new screen may offer this same emotional cocktail of envy and loss.
But what did you expect? You take a product that is 90 percent screen and a company hangs its reputation on making the prettiest products around, and you’re bound to arrived at this: the point when Apple ruins other screens for you.
What else is new?
The iPad’s processor has been upgraded to a A5X. Can you feel the difference? Not really. At least, not in the few minutes I had to play with the tablet. App load times seemed a little faster, but mostly the beefed-up quad-core graphics processor seems to be a necessary measure for juggling twice the pixels of the previous model.
I never felt the idea of Siri on the iPad was as natural a fit as it is for the iPhone. Luckily, Apple feels the same way. While Siri won’t be coming to the iPad, voice dictation will. That said, voice dictation on a tablet still strikes me as weird. I’m assuming you won’t jog with your iPad and while transcribing your every brilliant utterance, the way you would with an iPhone. Also, if someone asks you where to find great Thai food nearby, your phone is likely to be your first point of reference. Still, voice dictation is a welcome addition, and I suspect it will come in handy for dictating e-mails and bypassing the touch-screen keyboard when searching for information online.
I still contend that it’s a bit silly waving a tablet around to capture photos and video, but I understand the counterpoint and I’ll admit that the iPad’s screen makes a better display than any camera or smartphone. Also, if you’re a fan of Apple’s FaceTime video chat, the improved back camera quality is an obvious advantage over the camera in the iPad 2.
And finally, for all of you jet-setting, mobile-data-devouring types, the iPad is now available in a 4G LTE model. Prices for 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB come in at $629, $729, and $829, respectively.
What’s missing?
As far as disappointments go, Apple could have been more aggressive with its processor performance, or perhaps brought the iPads cameras up to iPhone 4S specs. Perhaps it could have gone thinner or done more to extend its lead in battery life.
Heck, let’s also throw in the age-old complaints about Apple’s reluctance to include microSD memory expansion, a dedicated port for video output, or a truly universal charging connection. Oh yeah, and Adobe Flash support while you’re at it.
Personally, there’s really nothing I can point to and say, “Apple has clearly doomed itself.” The company took its already excellent product and updated it with a gorgeous screen.
I suppose the only missed opportunity I can point to is the lack of a Kindle-priced competitor. The rumor mill suggests that Apple may release a smaller tablet later this year, but until then, it seems that Apple’s only answer to the budget tablet craze is its $199 Apple iPod Touch.
Buy it or skip it?
If you have an original iPad, by all means upgrade to the iPad 3. The used market for first-generation iPads is still alive and well and will hopefully afford you at least $100 toward the new iPad that is nearly half the thickness and twice the pixels as the original iPad.
For iPad 2 owners, the question is a little fuzzier. Since the design is virtually unchanged, the question really comes down to how much you’ll appreciate the new screen. If you get a big kick out of showing the latest tech toy, the mew iPad and its industry-first QXGA touch screen should be a crowd-pleaser. If your job involves sales or presentations, the new iPad’s dramatic screen upgrade may also makes sense (as might that 4G connectivity).
The final little push I’ll give it is the same push I’d give to someone considering a better TV or even a new kitchen table: if it’s something you’ll be looking at every day, then spend the money for something that’s going to put a smile on your face. I feel corny saying it, but as a chronic cheapskate, it’s something I have to tell myself often.
Still, cheapskate that I am, if a tablet isn’t already a staple of your daily routine, waiting can’t hurt you. If you’re new to tablets, consider dipping your toe in the water with a $199 Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet.
Final thoughts
I have to admire Apple’s gamesmanship. It was the first to make a tablet people cared about. Then, just when the competition started to feel confident, Apple sliced the iPad to an impossibly thin design. For its third act, Apple has pushed tablet screen expectations to a ludicrous new height.
The competition will inevitably catch up, just as surely as Apple will raise the stakes all over again.

FLASH: ANDREW BREITBART’S “OBAMA VIDEOS” SET FOR RELEASE
Earlier today, Buzzfeed’s Ben Smith announced on Twitter that video researcher Andrew Kaczynski had released “the mysterious Harvard/Obama/race video that the Breitbart folks have been talking about.”
The video, which Kaczynski says was “licensed from a Boston television station,” shows a young Barack Obama leading a protest at Harvard Law School on behalf of Prof. Derrick Bell, a radical academic tied to Jeremiah Wright–about whom we will be releasing significant information in the coming hours.
However, the video has been selectively edited–either by the Boston television station or by Buzzfeed itself. Over the course of the day, Breitbart.com will be releasing additional footage that has been hidden by Obama’s allies in the mainstream media and academia.
Breitbart.com Editor-in-Chief Joel Pollak and Editor-at-Large Ben Shapiro will appear on The Sean Hannity Show to discuss the tape. The full tape will be released tonight on Fox News’ Hannity.

Dallas Cowboys Linebacker Allegedly Schemed to Hustle Wells Fargo Out of $2 Million
DALLAS COWBOYS STAR SUED You Can’t HIDE from Your $2 Million Debt!!
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking is the mastermind in a diabolical scheme to screw Wells Fargo out of $2 MILLION … this according to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ.
Brooking — a 13-year NFL vet who signed a 3-year $6 million contract in 2009 — has been sued in federal court in Georgia … where he allegedly took out 2 separate loans in 2008 which totaled $1,996,224.73.
But according to the suit, Brooking “realized he would not be able to meet his obligations” to Wells Fargo … and secretly embarked on a “systematic effort to hinder, delay and defraud” the bank.
WF claims Brooking began to hide all of his substantial assets, including property in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina … so the bank couldn’t go after his homes to satisfy the debt.
According to the lawsuit, the plan was simple … Brooking simply transferred the deeds out of his name to various “insiders, affiliates and relatives.”
The bank is asking the judge to clear a legal path so it can go after Keith’s property.
But a rep for Brooking tells TMZ “There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to support Wells Fargo’s allegations that Keith transferred any properties … to fraudulently conceal assets.”
The rep adds, “These allegations are completely unfounded and Keith is and will continue to defend himself vigorously against these allegations.”
All-Inclusive Resorts Reinventing Themselves to Be Tonier
PRACTICAL TRAVELER
Including More in All-Inclusives
By MICHELLE HIGGINS
Published: March 7, 2012
MENTION the words “all-inclusive resort” and thoughts of bad buffets, watered-down drinks and wristband-wearing guests doing the conga may come to mind. But all-inclusive resorts, which have traditionally included basic accommodations and meals, are reinventing themselves with chic rooms, sophisticated restaurants, butlers and activities all wrapped into one price.
Related
Many hotel brands are also offering all-inclusive options for travelers who want to know exactly what their vacation will cost. For example, the Fairmont Mayakoba, an upscale resort just south of Cancún, recently introduced its first inclusive meal plan with the “appetite for luxury package,” which starts at $499 a night, per couple, and covers the room, two children five years or younger, bike rentals and unlimited food and beverages.
In the last year, at least two Starwood resorts, the Westin Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal in Costa Rica and the Sheraton Bijao Beach Resort in Panama, have gone completely all-inclusive with meals, accommodations and children’s club all covered under one price — a first for the company. The pricing direction was largely “a response to demand for more vacation packages from our customers,” said Trip Barrett, a vice-president for Starwood’s Latin America properties.
The new breed of all-inclusive resorts can be particularly attractive to travelers looking for one-sum vacations in these uncertain economic times. “There’s a psychological effect here,” said Scott D. Berman, head of the hospitality and leisure division at PricewaterhouseCoopers, “to know your vacation is already paid for and you’re not going to be opening your wallet every five minutes à la carte.”
But travelers need to do their research. While most all-inclusive resort offerings are covered in the price, expect to pay extra for special services and amenities like spa treatments, premium drinks and late-night baby-sitting. And while practically every place claims to have something for everyone, you can still end up feeling out of place if your travel style clashes with other guests. “I’ve been to several cheap all-inclusives that cater to ‘everyone’ — not just families — and I can’t count the number of inebriated pool-goers, partying-all-night-in-the-room neighbors and lap-dancing waitresses I have encountered,” Kyle McCarthy, editor at FamilyTravelForum.com, wrote in an e-mail.
To help you figure out if an all-inclusive might be right for you, here is a sampling of new or recently redone resorts that go beyond the usual buffet spreads and bland accommodations.

JUICY DETAILS OF THE “MANHATTAN MADAM” SUBURBAN MOM WHO MADE MILLIONS
via NY POST
She ferried her kids to band practice, attended parent-teacher conferences and cared for the family’s menagerie of rescued dogs and pot-bellied pigs.
But unlike other suburban housewives, Anna Gristina, 44, also allegedly worked as a high-end Upper East Side madam.
The stay-at-home mom of four catered to clientele with no less than $1 million in the bank while raking in piles of cash in more than 15 years in the industry, prosecutors charge.
CALL GIRL SAYS ‘MADAM’S’ LAW-ENFORCEMENT SOURCES TIPPED HER OFF ABOUT BUSTS
A drawn-looking Gristina yesterday was ordered held at Rikers on $2 million bond after prosecutors told a Manhattan Supreme Court judge that she was an extreme flight risk — and it surfaced that she had an alleged female hooker-booker partner, who is now on the lam.
In a day of explosive developments:
* An NYPD sergeant, Richard Wall, was ordered to appear today before the Internal Affairs Bureau with his memo book logging his work for the past five years after being seen making repeated trips in and out of the East 78th Street building that allegedly housed Gristina’s brothel.
* It was revealed that Gristina had a partner-in-crime, Manhattan “matchmaker” Jaynie Baker, who flew the coop before the two were indicted, sources said. The strawberry-blond Baker, 30, claimed to work for a legitimate Union Square dating service.
* A source said Gristina employed “Penthouse and Playboy models’’ to service clients who “were all millionaires except two billionaires — hedge-funders, CEOs and real-estate moguls.”
* The investment bank Morgan Stanley searched records of visitors at its New York offices to try to track down which of its bankers met with Gristina before her bust last month to allegedly discuss setting up an online prostitution service.
Today, Gristina’s attorney said he never asked her about a so-called black book.
Peter J. Gleason told “Good Day New York” that “as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t exist.”
He says if the mom of four is found guilty of the charges, “it’s irrelevant to me if there’s a black book or note.”
Gleason says the prosecution has not shared with the defense team information about its allegations that the Monroe, woman peddled underage girls and had police protection.
He says the allegation she promoted sex with children was “a ploy” the police sometimes use “if they have a hostile client that they want to break.”
Sources said the petite, green-eyed Gristina spent years juggling her illicit work with a quiet, unassuming life in the ’burbs.
