China to start exporting vaccines

From the makers of safety-system-less high speed rail cars and lead laden children’s toy products, I give you the latest health hazard to be mass produced from the Asian world. Safety will, of course, be a top priority.

Read here:

BEIJING (AP) — The world should get ready for a new Made in China product — vaccines.

China’s vaccine makers are gearing up over the next few years to push exports in a move that should lower costs of lifesaving immunizations for the world’s poor and provide major new competition for the big Western pharmaceutical companies.

However, it may take some time before some parts of the world are ready to embrace Chinese products when safety is as sensitive an issue as it is with vaccines — especially given the food, drug and other scandals the country has seen.

Still, China’s entry into this market will be a “game changer,” said Nina Schwalbe, head of policy at the GAVI Alliance, which buys vaccines for 50 million children a year worldwide.

“We are really enthusiastic about the potential entry of Chinese vaccine manufacturers,” she said.

Britain enters mild recession, blames EU

LONDON (AP) — The British government blamed the euro crisis for a big downgrade of the country’s growth projections and warned that it will only achieve its deficit-reduction goals if European leaders deliver a big, bold solution soon.

Britain’s Treasury chief George Osborne said Tuesday that Europe’s third-largest economy was being buffeted by the slowdown in the eurozone. Though Britain retains the pound, having opted out of joining the euro, around 50 percent of the country’s exports go to the 17-nation eurozone.

“If the rest of Europe heads into recession, it may prove hard to avoid one here in the U.K.,” Osborne told the House of Commons.

A number of economic indicators have shown that the eurozone is heading for recession in the wake of a crippling debt crisis that’s shown alarming signs of spreading from the relatively small economies of Greece and Ireland to much-bigger Italy and Spain.

Given the sharp deterioration in the eurozone, Osborne said the government was “undertaking extensive contingency planning to deal with all potential outcomes of the euro crisis.”

Osborne told lawmakers that the independent Office for Budget Responsibility now expects Britain’s GDP to grow by 0.9 percent this year, around half the 1.7 percent rate predicted in March. For next year, the OBR predicts growth of 0.7 percent, sharply down from the 2.5 percent prediction in March.

Its forecasts are in line with the Bank of England though slightly better than Monday’s projection by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that showed Britain already slipping into a mild recession.

Bill Gross thinks 5% returns will be high very soon

Read here:

Most investors for the next several years will be lucky to get a 5 percent return in their portfolios thanks to the growth-constricting debt problems in the U.S. and Europe, Pimco’s Bill Gross said.

Europe’s “dysfunctional family” of disparate nations will make a long-term debt solution elusive and cause the crisis to spread to other countries, said Gross, who as co-CEO at Pimco helps run the world’s largest bond fund.

In his monthly commentary, Gross paints a grim picture of Europe’s future and advises investors to avoid the region and focus on other parts of the world such as Brazil and Asia.

“Investors should recognize that Euroland’s problems are global and secular in nature, reflecting worldwide delevering and growth dynamics that began in 2008,” he wrote. “It will be years before Euroland, the United States, Japan and developed nations in total can constructively escape from their straightjacket of high debt and low growth.”

Until then, he said, investors should get used to low rates, slow growth and weak returns from their portfolios.

Murdoch barely survives insurrection

LONDON (Reuters) – BSkyB (LSE:BSY.L) independent shareholders dealt James Murdoch a heavy blow on Tuesday with over 40 percent failing to back his re-election as chairman, venting their anger at his handling of a phone hacking scandal.

Several major shareholders told Reuters ahead of the key annual meeting that they would vote against the 38-year-old because they also want a truly independent chairman rather than an executive of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp (NasdaqGS:NWSA), which owns 39 percent of BSkyB.

While James Murdoch was supported by some shareholders in the room and given strong support by the board, the result marks his second investor drubbing in just over a month after he endured a huge protest vote at News Corp in October.

News Corp had to withdraw its $12 billion offer for BSkyB in July following revelations that people working for a News Corp weekend tabloid, the News of the World, had hacked into the phones of celebrities and murder victims to secure stories.

Results from Tuesday’s vote showed investors representing 75 percent of shares backed James Murdoch but excluding the stake held by his father’s company, support stood at 56 percent with 31 percent opposed to his appointment and 13 percent of votes withheld.

“He has been given a bloody nose by shareholders in this vote and there may well be further developments,” Tom Powdrill, a spokesman for the shareholder advisory group PIRC, said. “He has clearly lost the support of a large number of the company’s owners.”

Yellen see’s room for further Fed easing

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Janet Yellen, the Federal Reserve’s influential vice chair, said on Tuesday the U.S. central bank has room to ease monetary policy further to support a tenuous economic recovery.

Yellen said turmoil in financial markets stemming from both Europe’s banking crisis and general uncertainty about the outlook had increased the risks to the global economy, and that the Fed could offer additional support to U.S. growth.

“The scope remains to provide additional accommodation through enhanced guidance on the path of the federal funds rate or through additional purchases of long-term financial assets,” Yellen said in remarks prepared for delivery to a conference sponsored by the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank.

Yellen also called for policies to spur a faster recovery in the battered U.S. housing market, although she did not provide any specific recommendations.

The Fed in September decided to dip its toes back into the housing market by reinvesting proceeds of maturing mortgage and housing agency debt from its portfolio back into the mortgage-backed securities market.

Focus Media, $FMCN, Defends Itself Against Muddy Waters; Stock Down 6%

“Focus Media maintains both an LCD display network and a poster frame network, among its several lines of business. The co’s LCD display network refers to its network of display devices placed in high-traffic areas of commercial and public buildings under the brand name Focus Media. As of September 30, 2011, the 178,382 display devices in the LCD display network included: 116,026 LCD screens, 32,478 LCD 2.0 digital picture screens and 29,878 LCD 1.0 picture frame devices. Both the LCD screens and LCD 2.0 digital picture screens have the technical capacity to show video images as well as dynamic and static images, whereas the 1.0 picture frame devices that are part of the LCD display network only display traditional fixed images. The Company’s poster frame network, which is distinct from its LCD display network, consists of traditional and digital advertising poster frames placed mainly in the elevators and public areas of residential complexes which it markets under the brand name Framedia. The LCD 2.0 digital picture screens included in the co’s LCD display network device count are distinctly different from the digital and traditional frames included in the Company’s poster frame network device count. The LCD 1.0 picture frame devices are included in the Company’s LCD display network device count because, when the Company developed its LCD display network in Tianjin, Kunming and Shijiazhuang, it encountered difficulties in installing LCD screens or LCD 2.0 digital screens due to a lack of adequate power sources or other technical limitations, and therefore opted to use some traditional picture frame devices in these areas. The numbers of displays disclosed by the Company in the past have been completely accurate, but did not provide this granular breakdown.”

Norway Gunman “unfit to stand trial,” psychiatrists strike again

I’d like to make something very much clear; I think psychiatry is a bullshit field with zero findings that constitute a contribution to the “knowledge” of mankind. They run about, pretending they understand people, spouting off undless streams of psycho-babble, and at the end of the day accomplish little. Their books stand on shelves until they get discredited, decirculated, and burned.

The end.

This piece only confirms my theory, as now thanks to some idiot psychiatrists in Norway, the gunman that blew up one of their government buildings, then went to work slaughtering their children, has been found insane and therefore unfit to stand trial.

OSLO – A psychiatric report on Anders Behring Breivik found that the confessed gunman is insane and therefore not fit to stand trial over twin attacks that killed 77 people, Norway’s VG newspaper said Tuesday.

The VG report was published shortly before Norwegian prosecutors’ scheduled news conference to discuss the contents of the psychiatric evaluation.

The 240-page report, compiled by two psychiatrists, was delivered to the prosecutor’s office earlier Tuesday.

“We have no doubt when it comes to our conclusions,” one of the experts, Torgeir Husby, told reporters when the document was delivered.

Understand something; this man was not insane. What he is is extreme; he sought to preserve Norway culture and heritage, to push for a more conservative government, to cripple the labor party of Norway. Some of those causes like the opposition to labor movements I can even support which makes this a weird position to be in, but rather than go about the correct venues to affect that change, this guy grabbed some rifles and started murdering kids. He is very much sane and knew exactly what he was doing.

It was pre-meditated murder, and now it looks like Norway does not even have the ballsack to stand up and call him out on it.

Ron Paul Comments on Sanctions Against Iran

“Many people have the misconception that sanctions are an effective means to encourage a change of behavior in another country without war.  However, imposing sanctions and blockades are not only an act of war according to international law, they are most often the first step toward a real war starting with a bombing campaign.  Sanctions were the first step in our wars against Iraq and Libya, and now more sanctions planned against Syria and Iran are leading down the same destructive path.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) latest report, just out this month, there is no evidence that Iran has diverted enriched uranium from the peaceful and lawful generation of power toward building a nuclear weapon. According to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has every right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.  Unfortunately, US foreign policy has boxed Iran into a corner where they may view development of a nuclear weapon as the only way to maintain sovereignty. They are surrounded by unfriendly nuclear powers and history has shown that having a nuclear weapon is the best way to avoid being bombed or invaded. The unintended consequences of our confrontational policies toward Iran may be to actually encourage them to seek nuclear weapons capabilities. We should be using diplomacy rather than threats and hostility.”
