Bloomberg issued a report, citing 5 anonymous sources inside the White House who said Trump had no real plans to fuck with Amazon. It’s all smoke and mirrors, a parlor trick for the unwashed masses.
But inside the White House, there are no active discussions about turning the power of the administration against the company, according to five people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.
None of the five people was aware of any ongoing discussion about turning Trump’s tweets into action against Amazon, not on the legal or regulatory fronts, or even regarding its reliance on the U.S. Postal Service, which has drawn the lion’s share of Trump’s wrath.
Trump expressed a desire to aides last summer to raise the Postal Service’s rates for delivering Amazon packages, one person said. His staff explained to the president that the Postal Service is an independent organization and its mail rates are set by a commission, the person said.
Aides also discussed antitrust options in light of the Amazon and Whole Foods merger, but never seriously considered any action because the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department handle those matter independently.
Trump’s attacks — five tweets on subjects from the Postal Service to taxes and retailing — have weighed on the company’s shares, sinking its market value by about $55 billion over the past six days.

Regardless of the tax situation, Amazon is still vastly overpriced.
Amazon has a relatively simple business, but people misprice it because it is split in two segments: (1) a money-losing retail segment and (2) a highly profitable and rapidly growing cloud segment. So it is very difficult to come up with a single PE ratio (or any other ratio) for Amazon. The obvious solution is to price each segment separately and then combine them.
Amazon’s Retail business runs razor-thin margins on its retail business. What it gains in Big-box comparisons in avoiding reatil floor space (and parking area), it loses in needing larger warehouse (no floor space to dispaly inventory) and higher shipping costs (thanks to prime and other free shipping deals). In fact, Amzon lost moey on it’s rtetail business in 2017, so we can’t even assign a PE ratio. However, Price to Sales is a suitable metric. Walmart and Target have PS ratios of 0.53; Costco is 0.60. Given that AMZN is losing money and Walmart isn’t, their margins can’t be that much better, so their PS should be around the same level. Heck let’s bump it up to 0.8.
Assuming that the growth rate from 2015 to 2017 holds (27%), we get estiamted 2018 Retail sales of 204.2B, with a Market cap for the retail business (using PS) of $163B.
The AWS sales and profits are significant, so a PE ratio is more appropriate. Becuase of its high growth, a PE of 30 seems reasonable. Assuming that the growth rate from 2015 to 2017 holds (49%), the estimated sales are $26.0B in Revenue and $6.6B in profit. That works out to a maket cap of $198B.
This puts AMZN (Dec 2018) Target Market cap at $163B + $198B = $361B and a target price of $746/share.
The hard work is done above, but you can use different multiples if you want. For a conservative Bear, you could try a PS on retail of 1.6 and a PE on AWS of 40. This gives you a target share price of $1220, still 10% down from where we are at.
All it takes is for Trump to cancel the multi-billion $$$ contract Amazon has with Pentagram and that filthy ship Amazon starts sinking quickly; and your multipliers become meaningless.
