War and Rumors of War

It’s like a Nostradamus nightmare playing out here.

Apparently the soviets are on the verge of spreading into the Ukraine, like a cancer. I wonder why they would do that? It really doesn’t matter, as the markets plunged due to the specter of it all. I could throw a bunch of cornered rat analogies at you and none of them would be remembered. However, those of you who bought the dip hoping we’d recover, I am fairly certain you will remember the exact moment Russia decide to go ‘all in’ against the barbarians in the Ukraine.

Since these are simply rumors, I am not reacting and might just take the rest of the day off in protest.

Pretty simple… for the banking complex, military, and defense industry, “war is good for business”.

Americans have largely had their fill of the islamic boogeyman BS. Time to manufacture a new conflict.

          Flux,
I’m not sure I’d call isis taking over Iraq and wiping out Christianity there, Iran on the verge of a nuclear weapon, and 9/11 a ‘bogeyman’, but okay…

Ten million+ illegals have managed to sneak into this country in the past decade… yet there hasn’t been a single serious la-la-la-la-kaboom screw-head who managed to slip across the border and blow up a soft target?

Either we’ve been incredibly, improbably, unbelievably lucky, or the threat of islamic terrorism is vastly overstated.

BTW, did you know the evil Iranians have troops on the ground in Iraq fighting ISIS?

IMHO, the Iranians are not bat-shit crazy, despite what the MSM says.

We think these guys are capable of building a nuclear bomb, and they’re insane religious fanatics willing to risk total destruction of their country, but they can’t teach a couple hundred kamikazes to hablo espanol, sneak in here from Mexico, and blow up a few shopping malls? Gimme a break.

On a more practical note – Tehran is 1500 miles from Moscow. If the Russians want a new nuclear-armed neighbor, let them deal with it.

I disagree. In the Iran/Iraq war in
the 1980’s, Iran sent waves of
children to run across in suicide
            attacks. They were given plastic
keys and told these were the keys
to heaven. 1 million Iranian kids
were ‘martyred’ this way. THAT is
            the kind of government running
Iran. They are insane and believe
in an end of the world apocalpyse
that will bring the 13th imam etc.
i/e them getting nukes IS the end
            of the world. period.

Go look at a map of NATO vs Warsaw Pact members in 1992.

Compare that to NATO members today.

Then tell us who’s trying to take over the rest of the world.

This is a nuance of the post-cold war. There was a gentlemen’s agreement that we wouldn’t expand NATO to the Warsaw Pact countries. Those countries begged to be added and some were while Russia was weak. Ukraine was considering that action as well and Russia did something about it this time as they were able to do so.

            Point well taken.

            Not defending the evil empire.

Merely pointing out that NATO has outlived it’s mandate.

If wealthy Russian industrialists funded attempts to overthrow the Canadian government, and their government was busy signing treaties with Central American countries to establish military bases and missile defense systems, we would be understandably indignant.

Russia is very active in Central and South America, Putin signed several defense related agreements within the past few months alone. Venezuela has always been a problem but the agreement with Brazil is telling. China has been even more active. I think we tend to ignore this activity until nuclear missiles are in Cuba.

Important to note NATO is voluntary while Warsaw Pact membership was not. It’s important to note missile defense in Eastern Europe was withdrawn unilaterally and replaced with THAAD (which is benign to Russia) by the current administration years ago to reset US-Russian relations. It’s rational for vulnerable country’s to band together when they have a neighbor redrawing sovereign border’s by force (Georgia, 2008 for example, but Russia has a long history of this behavior).

Putin asked China to dump U.S. Treasuries in 2008 crisis, China declined. BRIC’s have been trying replace the USD as the world currency for a couple of decades.
Frankly the sanctions are pathetic with carve outs all over the place. NATO exercises would send a clear signal what lines cannot be crossed without a response (to avoid war).
Markets are using this as an excuse to sell-off. Cohen has been saying there will be a notable decline in US markets “toward the end of summer.”

    The Ukraine thing is odd.
Obama wants Russia to recognize their sovereignty and leave.
Russia is just annexing back an entity that left.

Kind of like if Florida, ,Texas, or Arizona told the Federal gov to take a hike.
If states did that and declared succession and wanted to be recognized as sovereign entities. You can bet that Obama, or any presidents, tone will change to “the need for a union under a federal government.”
Their will not be a tone of “states are sovereign entities that are entitled to a form of government of their choosing.”

Gentleman, read the Federalist Papers for a classic debate on the pros cons and cons of government.

        Wrong.
It is relevant. Ukraine was once a part of the Soviet Union.
You are also missing the overall point of the assertion in my analogy.

        Source:
The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic commonly referred to as Ukraine or Soviet Ukraine, was a sovereign Soviet socialist state and one of the fifteen constituent republics of the Soviet Union from its inception in 1922 to its breakup in 1991. For most of its existence, it was economically and politically the second-most powerful republic of the Soviet Union, behind only the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.

I would agree with you if the year was 1990, but empires fall and soverign nations are born. The British, French, Spanish, and a myraid of other empires got the memo.

On a different topic Putin wants Eastern Ukraine for strategic land access to Crimea (Russia’s only warm water port and access to the Black Sea), abundent natural resources, and just under 1/2 of the former Soviet defense sector is headquartered in Eastern Ukraine. Western Ukraine would be a burden for Putin, economically and culturally so he may only take part of the country and coerce the rest.
