Interesting Trends

America is over the single cup server phenomenon (GMCR), as well as losing weight at WTW. We’re also sick of the shit HLF makes, but love some sugar water soda pop: MNST, KO and PEP.

One thing is for certain, we still love AAPL and we hate travel agencies, opting for the online versions instead: PCLN, EXPE and TRIP. YELP is killing it because we don’t trust “professional food critiques.” The reviews that matter are the consensus opinions of the masses, which is why ANGI is of great interest to me.

Natural gas is so cheap, it has caused dementia in the management personal of America’s largest natural gas producer (CHK), leaving them open to a legitimate funding gap next year.

Coal has been killed, partly thanks to cheaper natural gas supplanting it at power plants and a seemingly worsening Chinese economy, leading to weak met coal pricing. Nevertheless, oil is still robust and margins at the refineries are very strong.

Online advertising is allegedly strong; but why is VCLK getting smashed this morning? American’s love to watch movies (RGC), but have grown weary of the sub-par offerings of NFLX. iTunes will crush them one day to dust.

The next big trend is out there, within reach of anyone who is paying attention. I happen to believe that trend is hidden in the cosmetically rich valuations of social networking stocks. Before you know it, their 50%+ growth rates will cheapen the valuations and these stocks will “Priceline” the fuck higher, scorching the shorts, sending those fuckers sheepishly to the breadline.

    just a thought –

My roommate owns his own contracting company. It’s small, and he only employs a few people on an hourly basis depending on the job.

He HATES Angie’s List, and gets nearly all his business from Yelp. According to him, not nearly enough people were using Angie’s List, and the possibility for getting a poor review seemed much higher (possibly due to the type of person that uses Angie’s List vs. Yelp)

He isn’t alone – all of his unwashed hoi polloi contractor brethren seem to prefer Yelp.
I bring this up because you focus on the restraunt aspect of Yelp a lot, but there are many other great aspects of Yelp that leave it even additional room for growth.

That’s why I shoveled my money into its furnance even before your praise.

Auto makers doing well except Europe is killing them. So buy US auto dealers….. LAD is my favorite, or there is PAG and a few others. No Euro exposure.

The jury is still out on YELP. You say they have no competition… I disagree. How do you know that YELP doesn’t fall ill to the same fate as yahoo in search or myspace in social networking?

I really like the business model of YELP, and believe there is plenty of money to be had. However, they have absolutely no footprint outside of their core markets.

ANGI is not really competition for them. Angie’s List has a flawed business model that will keep the company small forever. They charge a membership fee for their information which works for them, but won’t help them grow their business.

Google and Facebook are their real competition, and I don’t see how yelp could beat those two when push comes to shove.

One of them probably will purchase YELP, yes. However, it will most like be at a much lower price, imo.

That’s just bearshitter talk. YELP is worth much more than it’s currently trading in M&A terms. Goldman puts fair value at $40.
