Ahead of the Groupon ipo, I added to my GSVC position.

Any comment on WNR earnings?
GSVC WITHU LONG AND STRONG
I have it coming out of my ears
I really whiffed on this one. It appears as if the Fly won today even if it appeared he lost earlier.
didn’t GSVC buy into GRPN at an implided valuaation of $16b though? and the current GRPN ipo implies ~$12-13b value?
grpn will double
thanks, they are one of the fastest growing companies of all time so I can see the hype getting crazy in this market that will overpay for growth. I think Groupon was the fastest company ever to get to $1b in revenue?
What was GSVC’s cost basis on GRPN? Isn’t it pretty high?
Yes, they paid the equivalent of $25.44/share and they have all of 80,000 shares, so even if there’s a profit of a few hundred thousand dollars (of which GSVC’s management takes 20% off the top, by the way), you can divide that “profit” among GSVC’s 5.3 million shares and thereby derive your few-cent per share one-time gain. The Fly can hype this all he wants, but the math is the math.
WHAT 20% OFF THE TOP?
Plus, of course, the 2% “base management fee” on AUM. Have you read the prospectus?

>>We pay GSV Asset Management a fee for its services under the Investment Advisory Agreement consisting of two components — a base management fee and an incentive fee. The base management fee is calculated at an annual rate of 2.00% of our gross assets, which includes any borrowings for investment purposes. The incentive fee is determined and payable in arrears as of the end of each calendar year (or upon termination of the Investment Advisory Agreement, as of the termination date), commencing on December 31, 2011, and will equal the lesser of (i) 20% of our realized capital gains during such calendar year, if any, calculated on an investment-by-investment basis, subject to a non-compounded preferred return, or “hurdle,” and a “catch-up” feature, and (ii) 20% of our realized capital gains, if any, on a cumulative basis from inception through the end of each calendar year, computed net of all realized capital losses and unrealized capital depreciation on a cumulative basis, less the aggregate amount of any previously paid incentive fees. See “Investment Advisory Agreement.”
Why would you let facts get in the way of a good story?
It’s a moot point. You don’t buy GSV for their 2 mill stake in Groupon. It validates their model.
Stay short. See what happens to you.
I’m actually not short, due to the stock’s low liquidity and large cash position. (And I’m not shy about my short positions– if I were short, I’d be happy to say so.) I just think that if you’re going to continually tout GSVC’s Groupon position, your readers should understand how truly insignificant it is relative to the market cap.
Groupon may advertise its ass off which means it will most likely jump up for the first couple of hours, but I don’t trust it beyond that.
A part of me wants me to be wrong through.
Why not buy Groupon? Get in on the IPO.
This just in from a MWW channel check … their parking lot in Maynard, MA is 2/3’s empty as are the two executive parking spots there …
Curious what the short interest is in GSVC? Can we expect to get a quick bounce back to $19+ due to covering?
Ouch !
The “Fast Money” crew showing Groupon no love !
.
They always sound great being wrong. That’s teevee.
The best contrarian indicators out there!
UUP and TLT are giving warning signs again. So, Shall we see a slaughter start?
I sold some GSVC. My theory is, sell what’s up; buy what’s down.
Listen up:
The Groupon ipo isn’t a boon for GSVC. But what it shows is the success of their model, able to profit from the most hated ipo ever.
Wait until Facebook and Twitter IPO.
