I wouldnt be shorting VXX here. FXE and UUP are reaching serious extremes. IF either reverses, VXX could retrace half this drop in just a few minutes of trading.
Doing TA on an ETN that decays over time is rather silly, IMO… better watching the VIX.

VXX seems to be grossly underperforming the other hedges (TZA, FAZ, etc.) in this recent market environment, after outperforming at the beginning of the market decline. Any thoughts as to which hedge may be the best going forward?
VXX is mean reverting back and forth from 29.
Better hedge longer term is to take short positions as we rally this week or buy SH.

Right now it looks a little like the failed gap up day we had two weeks ago.
These predictions are always right, but only up to the catalyst, at which point we come up with a brand new reason why the market will go up or down.
In other words, it’s all bullshit.
Dawgg is not implying that techs and financials are the reason. Cause and correlation are not the same. Since he’s a very experienced trader, it’s interesting to know “why” these are predictive indicators in this particular environment. So, it’s not bullshit. Maybe on CNBC, but not on iBC.
I bring up those sectors because they represent the risk trade. That is all. No magic formulas, just observation.

People buying VXX or VIX, remember it is summer! You want to bet against the market why wouldn’t you buy a short or ultrashort ETF? In summer VIX has more reasons to stay flat or be down in spite of a down market (unless its 2008 of course) due to generally lower activity in the market – plain and simple. Just because a market is down doesn’t always mean VXX is going to be up, especially so during summer. Full disclosure – I am short VIX to hedge against a largely short based portfolio.
