VIX options are a pain in the ass, VXX is the lesser evil if your holding period is under a few weeks.

Hey Steve I was trying to figure out the symbol to get the VIX option chain when the VIX was at 18.9 but none of the assholes on the boards wanted to answer me. Now the thing is at 19.3 and I could’ve made a nice little profit on some intraday calls. Anyway, do you know what the best way to play VIX options is going forward? And why do you recommend against them? Just trying to arm myself with information.
I think the VIX will easily hit the 20 SMA but beyond that I am unsure given the market climate, but I just have a gut feeling its about to rise significantly and wanted to put a small position on that.
I’ve been short front month 19 puts since last Friday (I think), finally paying off. Profitability comes if the VIX is above 18.20 by next Tuesday.

April VIX futures currently at 21-ish: http://cfe.cboe.com/DelayedQuote/SSFQuote.aspx?ticker=VIX/J0 so buying calls on that month would mean that you would want to see this future, not spot vix to rise. Hence, pain in the ass.

mhass33: Speaking as an aforementioned asshole, the questions about your trading platform are to be best directed to your brokerage not your fellow shady burlap festooned internet leeches (myself proudly included) who loiter ’round stairwells and elevator shafts here at the hallowed hallways of iBankCoin. The pros and cons of volitility products are best addressed by quant white papers and are the lock and trade of many fine options blogs. There is nothing straightforward about volatility of volatility. Does Ameritrade show options chains with “$VIX” or maybe “^VIX” ? I can see the argument against having such superglue coated hand grenades being available on a pedestrian retail platform.
I won’t disrespect Fly by pimping Steve’s website on here, but he can definitely help you bank coin. Just another weapon in the arsenal. Ignore him at your own peril – he knows his shit.
