Fuck recycling. You tree hugging dipshits can separate the plastics from the wood; I throw everything in one big disgusting bag, so that the slobs, better known as “garbage men,” can pick it up for me and toss it in their filthy trucks. Trust me, I’m not being a snob about this, nor do I hate the environment. I’m just painfully indifferent to the plight of the recyclers. The way I see it, the city is making coin off of my labor: fuck them and their environmental edicts.
This is a point of contention in The Casa de Fly, as Mrs. Fly is a HUGE advocate of recycling. She figures by stacking our blue garbage bins with empty Monster Sodas, the world will be saved and the sea lions will have icebergs to lay out on.
FUCK THE SEA LIONS and FUCK ICEBERGS. As far as I’m concerned, icebergs never did shit for me; why should I care about them? Any of you folks every hear about the Titanic?
As a result of my anti-recycling behaviour [sic], the garbage nazis have targeted me and leave tickets on my door, just about once per week. They must think $50 fines will deter “The Fly” from pursuing his egregious course of action, which is to not give a fuck about recycling. I throw banana peels inside of my milk cartons, then throw them inside empty LCD tv boxes and place it on the curb. Who said I wasn’t a gangster?
Fuck the Department of Sanitation aka “Recycling Nazis,” and their $50 fines. They must not know how much money I have in my fucking checking account.
You should see those fat bastards rummaging through my fucking trash—like upright walking pigs— just to catch me with a few plastic bottles mixed in with my chicken bones. At the end of the day, I refuse to be a victim of SLAVE LABOR, sorting shit out for assholes with an agenda. I don’t play that game. As a matter of fact, I don’t play any games: I make them. Tying totally unrelated assumptions together is an all to common mistake.
Some expert at Gonzaga University, with a lot of time on his hands, calculated that at current rates all the garbage in the US over the next 1,000 years would fill up a 35 square mile landfill 100 yards deep.
This sounds like one of those “Holy shit!” scary figures until you consider this is about one tenth of one percent of the land currently used for grazing in the US. Also, this would be the accumulation over 1,000 years by which time we should have bigger things to worry about, like overthrowing our robotic overlords.
As for saving resources by recycling, this is where it gets tricky. Partly this is because whether or not recycling saves resources depends on whether you consider human labor to be a resource (that is, the effort to pick up, sort and transfer the items to be recycled). Recycling requires more trucks, more crews and more people to oversee the entire process. In Los Angeles alone there are twice as many garbage trucks than there would have been without the recycling program. Just like those douchebags who drive to the gym to run on a treadmill but still hop in the car to go the one block to the corner store to pick up their pork rinds and soda, it’s not clear just how much benefit there is at the end of the day.
Also, re-using something is not always better than just tossing it away. A chemist at the University of Victoria calculated that you would need to use a ceramic mug 1,000 times before you would see benefits over using disposable polystyrene cups for those 1,000 cups of coffee. This is because it takes far more energy to make that mug and takes energy and water to wash it after each use.

Not only is recycling a scam moneymaker for the sanitation comapnies, but buying recycled paper is also a scam. Make sure you buy sustainably farmed toilet paper (e.g. cottonelle, kleenex used to be dicks, but now nearly all their trees are sustainable). Non-recycled toilet paper is good for the environment. When trees get sufficiently large, they stop taking in carbon from the atmosphere. It’s good for the environment to chop a couple down and hide it in the ground, while planting new trees that will take in more carbon. So remember, the Seventh Generation toilet paper at whole foods is probably worse than big-bad Kleenex Cottonelle. Recycling uses a lot of energy and doesn’t create carbon sinks. Fuck the hippies, wipe your ass on old-growth trees while saving the environment.

A friend of mine in Westchester County used to carefully separate everything (glass, plastic, etc.) to recycle… until one day when he noticed the garbage man dumping everything all together in the garbage truck. I don’t know if that has changed.

On stockcharts.com, they have the $OEXA50R which is the percentage of stocks moving above their 50 day moving average. I noticed that this anectdotal indicator might be at an extreme point. The last two pivots July and October this index was at 33%. It is now at 33% and climbing.
Of course, this indicator could always sell down more which is the flipside of this theory, but the logical point of pivot seems now. So lets hope the SPY and IWM seem to hold on today.

I agree Fly. I just had this conversation with some friends a month or two ago. My biggest complaint was the separation part. I too feel I shouldn’t be doing this considering they make loads of cash selling the plastic pellets back to companies to reproduce products(bottles, fleece sweaters,etc..), which then in turn gets sold back to me at a premium via gubermint taxes.
