Changing Of The Guard?
This is the first day since June 2004 that yields on the 10-year Note have been down by more than 3%, yet the S&P 500 is still in positive territory.
The last 18 times yields have dropped this much in one day, the S&P has declined on the day, averaging -2.4%.
So either we’re right now witnessing a change in character (which should be a net positive for stocks moving forward), or one of them is about to catch up with the other.
I can find only six times in the past four decades where yields dropped 3% but the S&P rose 2%. FWIW, one of them was near the bottom of the 1978 bear market, two were near the 1982 bottom and one was near the 1987 low. Overall, the S&P was up a month later every time by an average of +5.2%.

Credit market update
While everyone cheers the Government induced fall in LIBOR and commercial paper rates, the corporate bond market and Mortgage Backed Security markets aren’t buying it. In fact, they are selling it.
Spreads continue to blow out and we continue to add to MBS.
That said, the tale of two markets continues with credit speaking loudly. Could it be year end pressures? Perhaps, but I doubt it.
One thing stands out. The only markets that are improving are the ones that are rigged. The other markets, like corporates, municipals, etc, aren’t budging. They are just too big to manipulate.
My firm remains cautious.
One last note, I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago that I thought being short the SPX had a poor risk/reward. I now would like to reverse that view. I see upside to 1050-1075 and downside to 500-650.
While not short, I intend to be shortly.

Cap may be right due to the fact that people have already moved some cash into all the obama related healthcare and biotech and solar, and they are already pretty much positioned for him winning. If McCain wins, they need to panic sell, and get things into cash, so they can decide which sectors and stocks to move their money into. But I think long term McCain is bullish.
But there’s also the “marshall law” that was supposedly declared according to some representative on some youtube video… Marshall law is probably bearish.
