I bought RKUS March 15 calls today, as well as weekly options in TWTR and HLF. I missed my spot in MPEL.
I’m going to start off managing positions like they were little children until I feel like I can let them run all over the place again, in reckless fashion.
Speaking of which, our next trading crash course will be on portfolio/position/risk management. I know we discussed trading for a living as a topic, but I cannot find a tax professional to hire for an hour long presentation.
If I can get myself prepared, we’ll start the course today. I will let you know for sure later this afternoon.

One of my biggest winners just emptied its bowels all over my portfolio – MHR.
Might add more to it depending on the action this week; Earnings report today was very good, no reason for this sell off imo.

OA – any chance you would add in your thoughts on capital required to go out on your own and how to allocate same. It could be kind of an amalgam of the two courses. This was going to be the most interesting part of your trading for a living topic anyway.
Last time we talked at all about this, the basic assumption is about 5% per month. So if you need 10K/month to live, you need a capital base of AT LEAST $200K. Obviously there WILL be drawdown months (see, Feb 2014 for example). As to allocation, I think it depends on where you think your strengths are as a trader, but obviously Jeff has at least 4 different buckets going all the time, some “investment” buckets, some short term holdings, and obviously his speculation bucket. I’m sure he could fill in percentages for you.

wish I could say I was. I took down snta/keyw friday instead of kndi…shoulda done all 3 I know. been in ino since 2.50s, might be selling some today, although I could just let this be part of my longterm basket that I shouldn’t be touching for awhile. but I’ve got a lot in the basket that has been doing well, recently…so I feel like its probably time for me to be smacked down again, and I’d like to take some gains ahead of that.
I’m in it in two separate accounts, and loving it!

JAH, keep watch in the short term…consolidating a move, not exactly copying the market today…that’s good. line chart diagonal support shortly below. could potentially argue reverse head and shoulders. either play for tight stop below or give it room to 60. or wait.
I try not to do this, but wanted to take a second to pimp a stock that I feel is very much under the radar, but plays with a lot of themes that people here are interested in. CRAiLAR (CRLRF) is trading at around $1.50, and is involved in the cultivation and development of apparel and textiles using flax fibers – marketed as “the friendliest fiber on earth.” Quite a few large-scale apparel companies, such as Levi Strauss, Hanes and Target have been involved in R&D with them, and they recently received funding from IKEA and the venture capital arm of Adidas.
Today they announced their involvement in the cultivation of hemp fibers for textile products in Europe, and with plans to expand into the US market (where legal). The tide seems to be turning for hemp cultivation legality to expand throughout many regions in the U.S.
I have been a holder of their stock as a long-term, speculative play when they only were producing and spinning flax blends, but the hemp cultivation is even more interesting. Basically, it has two of the major macro-trends that I am looking at; sustainability/green manufacturing and increasing marijuana and hemp legalization.
Fair warning; this is still very much a speculative play – they have no earnings to speak of, and are reliant on venture capital funding. However, I feel that they really only need one of these large brands to get on board beyond the development stage into commercialization for their sales and revenue to go through the roof. It’s worth it for me to put a few percentage points worth of my capital into the name, buy and forget.

My opinion is that we are in the early stages on this. That being said, this tends to have big moves either way, so you will likely see another opportunity.

not sure why exactly, but I went way out with OPK Jan ’15 3 calls @6.15 fill. (I never go that far out, and haven’t put much thought into this trade at all…but it’s done).
Well you got 10 months to take it off… Looks like money to me though, and I like doing far out options and leaps.

I dunno, I just decided to go with options over stock. I wasn’t really precise with the entry, but this is a longer term play anyway. I could see some heat to 8.50, but I think it has a good chance at 10 or even 12 before next January. Its nice to have something where the minute ups and downs are not worrisome…not that they ever should be, but you know what I mean.
