OA, I (unfortunately) have an underwater position in NUGT from awhile ago. With the recent run up in NUGT, how would you (or would you at all) try to use covered calls to work your way out of the position? If you’d attempt to use covered calls, would you try selling OTM calls (mainly hoping for the time decay premium), or ITM calls (thinking that the price will probably decrease in the near future given its recent runup)? Thanks!

Given your thoughts on gold going down in the future (and the fact that NUGT would probably also get hit as well despite the divergence between the miners and GLD), I was thinking that covered calls might help in working my way out of being underwater. ignoring the morning ticks higher, this is staying inside the coil. I expected this to be a mover next week, but bought in yesterday at the lows anticipating they would hold. $79 is the stop on this, but don’t let the mm scare you out on an intraday dip. Same coiling as XONE had before it ripped then snapped…I’ll trade this pattern often. WUBA was the same until it ripped on the 7th and again on the 15th. CUDA on the 16th…you get the picture.

Haha that was me last month. Being patient when deploying capital is tough but is key to minimizing loses. It’s even harder when you have so much cash from big wins.
I noticed my biggest problem was when OA picks out his favorites during AHWOA and the next day I was jumping in on the smallest of pullbacks. I will now stay patient and buy on the down bloops.
Selling MS, SWKS, CRM, AMED, P, ZIOP, and WDAY way too early didn’t help either.
It was a good learning month for me.

I think you are better off taking a position that already is sold off on wednesday, publishing a BS price about how it is insolvent, then add to the position after the piece on Thursday and then wait for the next day where an article debunks your article.
That way the shorts pile in, the idiots sell on news others stop put, dumb shorts chase lower, then they realize it is all crap and then they hit a market buy orders like crazy and then others come in and chase on top of it.
Can someone just automate this for me? Where’s woodshedder? I think we can create a template that uses keywords and drops in ticker symbols.

Leaving Fidelity…they would not negotiate fees…the rep agreed with me that IB would be a more cost efficient choice for my level of trading (60 trades/mo) I have been practicing on my new IB account to get the hang of the platform…It is not as simple as fidelity…but the savings will be worth the learning curve.
Rastaman, I’m with Fidelity too. I was gonna call them Monday, but maybe I won’t waste my time. Their ticket charge for options is killing me. I was on IB’s fee page but it’s unclear what the commision is for say 5 contracts, is it just a buck a contract no matter what?
Fidelity said they can’t reduce the fee structure for small accounts. IB charges $0.70 per contract(assuming the ask price is greater than $0.10) or $1.00 minimum. In your example of 5 contracts x $0.7 … IB will charge approx $3.50 Fidelity will charge $11.70. You will save $16.40 when you open and close a trade in IB.
Yeah IB ends up being about $0.75 per contract in the long run due to regulatory fees on each trade (amounts to a few cents per contract). Some trades will be like $0.35 and some will be higher, like $1.20 for example, but it will average out to about $0.75.
IB also has the best fills, so in the end you save more on better fills than commissions anyways. For this reason I do not trade on Optionshouse; they’re just terrible at filling an order.
did they define what “small account” means?
IB allows other trading platforms to “plug in”, like Ninja etc. IB fees are good, but once you’re categorized as professional the standing charges are high (information, quotes etc, etc), and you’re likely to be viewed as professional not just based on your regulatory status, but other factors too (corporate status etc) – it’s worth checking these things out. Trades and execution are good.

@green machine – as per AHWOA chat Friday – I like the looks of LRE, TOG (which I own) and SGY looks pretty good too.
Have made exactly 2 options trades on the TSX – neither panned out. Many are pretty thinly traded w/big spreads.
Check out PMT and FUU – (full disclosure, I own both of these). Scanning for more interesting setups north of the border…
Options setups are much harder on tsx. I’m big on divy plays for revenue stream and tax purposes (i.e. buy and holds).
OK – not something I expected to have to deal with here on this forum but thanks for sharing buddy – the anonymity of the internet must be very empowering for you.

picked up the $SGMS Feb 17.50s for 20c. IV at the low of range and consolidating the recent run nicely.

Hand to hand combat in ONVO on this drop. Even though bid/ask was at .40 for both, couldn’t get my limit order filled. Even moved it up as the stock went up. Can’t chase now, so I put a .40 GTC order in…
In retrospect, that CLF Jan “week 4” calls trade was the one i was the most excited about, and its gone nothing but down since the entry. Its the last of Jan garbage to be tossed out.
