Stupid Business Events of the Year

“Monde-what? That was the response from many observers after Kraft Foods announced plans in March to name its spun-off snacks division “Mondelez International.” Kraft said the new name — prounounced “mohn-dah-LEEZ” — comes from a combination of the words “monde,” derived from the Latin for “world,” and “deliz,” short for “delicious.” But it later emerged that “Mondelez” is pronounced similarly to a Russian phrase describing a sex act. A Mondelez spokesman said that when “pronounced properly,” the name “is unmistakable and has no negative connotations.”

Luckily, there aren’t plans for any Mondelez-branded products; Mondelez International is simply the corporate home for existing brands like Oreo, Cadbury, Nabisco and Trident. — James O’Toole “

Oregon Bus Crash Kills 9

PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) – Nine people were killed and at least 26 others injured on Sunday when a charter bus headed to Canada from Las Vegas skidded off an icy mountain highway and crashed down an embankment in northeastern Oregon.

The Oregon State Police said a preliminary investigation showed the charter bus, carrying about 40 people through the Blue Mountains en route to Vancouver, British Columbia, “lost control on the snow/ice covered westbound lanes of Interstate 84” near Pendleton.

The bus crashed through a guardrail alongside the road and went down an embankment of around 200 feet. Crews trained in rope rescue were needed to bring victims back up to the highway, police said.

GOP Adopts a Fiscal Cliff Poison Pill

“As you can see in our Fiscal Cliff liveblog the negotiations are at an impasse, reportedly because the Republicans have tossed in a demand that Social Security benefits be cut.

They don’t actually call it a “cut” but rather a change to how benefits are indexed. Currently benefits rise every year in step with CPI. The GOP wants it to rise in step with an alternative measure of inflation called the Chained CPI. Dylan Matthews at Wonkblog has a good in-depth explanation of how the Chained CPI works, but the gist is that the Chained CPI tries to take more into account how people substitute cheaper/inferior products when the price of their preferred goods rise…”

Yemeni Government Covers Up U.S. Responsibility for Civilian Drone Deaths

“The government of Yemen has tried to claim responsibility for numerous airstrikes by American drones in an effort to keep its population from siding with al-Qaeda militants.

Of the nearly 40 attacks launched by U.S. unmanned aircraft in the Middle Eastern country, one in particular has stirred considerable controversy and antipathy towards Washington.

On September 2, an American missile destroyed a Toyota truck loaded with 14 Yemenis from a village near Radda. The attack killed 11, including a woman and two children.

The Yemeni government tried to claim that its own air force carried out the assault, and that those killed were al-Qaeda militants. Many locals refused to accept the official explanation, and eventually Yemeni officials were forced to acknowledge that the strike killed only civilians….”

Documentary: C.V.D.

Peter Joseph has done a ton of research and comes to conclusions that alienate him in the public eye. He cares not and for that he should be applauded.

At any rate, he has come out with a web series called Culture in Decline. Only 3 have aired so far and and his next show in the series will come in February.

For now you can get a taste of his truth with episode 3. Episode 2 did nothing for me, while episode 1 is common knowledge for those who are paying attention.

Cheers on your weekend!

John McAfee Tells World How He Fooled Cops and Escaped Belize

One of the reporters who snuck out of Belize with John McAfee earlier this month said the adventure was “dangerous, amazing, touching, and many other adjectives that I cannot remember right now.”

Turns out that the words that eluded him were “rainy” and “lucky.”

On the day after Christmas, McAfee posted a long blog post describing how he gave Belizean authorities the slip and snuck out of the country to avoid questioning (and in his estimation, wrongful prosecution) following the murder of his neighbor, Greg Faull.

“It’s visually interesting and it is mostly a happy story — in line with most Christmas stories,” he wrote.
