It’s more of a gift to the idiots who took out mortgages when they should not have than a gift to the banks, but at least it gives the market some sense of closure.
We (bank customers not in arrears) pay for it, and the Chicago Protection Racket moves on to its next shakedown.

u r right on. bot bac 9 calls when this news broke a couple of days ago. some said it would punish banks. but i see it as a new social program that rewards bad behavior, and leaves the rest of us to pay the bill.

I no longer smoke any thing at all, it helps with the clear thinking. Banks are trying to buy some good PR. This is not a good solution on any level.
Wouldn’t it be securitized loans on the banks balance sheets, therefore forcing a loss on the bank? It would be especially dishonest if loans owned by funds in pensions and 401ks were targeted. How can that be seen as a fair resolution?
