Weird Science is Here

Think about the possibilities. Print nuclear missile casings in your own home. Teenagers will print iPhone covers and perverts dildos. Without looking at the valuation or projected revenues, this is going to be huge.

There are two companies that I know of who specialize in 3-d printing: DDD and SSYS. DDD is set to launch their 3-d printer for retail on 4/10.

Yes, perverts are sep from teenagers, even though, as I recall, I was both when under 20.

          A return 50%?

that’s a pretty lofty “let’s play catchup” goal especially since you missed most of the runnup if you did what you claimed. As for go away in May..does that still work for ya? I thought that thinking was in the pre-HFT’s iphone days, when old Blankfein type guys in the market used to park their asses on rented lawn chairs somewhere in overpriced beach digs on Long Island and ran the market more or less to their schedule. don’t trust historic precedents anymore. Market is too freakin weird today…different planet run by different animals.

It is a pretty cool thing, I have seen it in real life.. some high end architectural offices use it for architectural models, I believe it costs about 40K… they use some kind of starch based mass and it colors after..
It is still an early phase as for real Iphone cover you would need some kind of liquid polymer, so you can actually use the product after…
It is like out of some science fiction movie, pretty amazing.
I also like the idea that if you don’t like a product you’ve made you can recycle material back and build another one lol would be awesome.. Imagine use this thing for kids toys…

for $1,300 – now we’re talking small architects, engineers, designers, drafters, Plumbing and HVAC outfits and obviously other trades. What better way to price out a job than to be able to see it (well the more confusing parts of it that involve a lot of guessing anyway)in 3D? Also it will allow architects and engineers to fully explain their intent to contractors – something that is always a point of contention on a job site.
I also saw where one of these printers will create working tools. That alone is a business that will print cash hand over hand.

This technology took a long time to bring to market. I saw samples of 3-D printed objects in 1995; they didn’t look very good back then, but the concept was really unique.

I looked into DDD’s equipment last year for prototyping for simple relief sculptural products. Terrible resolution. Not ready yet. Someday though…

Other applications for 3D printing are:
    1. Medical applications, such as printing a jaw bone for cancer patients who lost their jaw bone to cancer.
2.Printing whole apartments (including wall decorations) for low income housing or temporary hotel rooms. Such a 3D printer is, of course, the size of a house and transportable on a truck. By the way, the main “printer ink” ingredient is….corn!
    Very interesting technology…..

    Carry on,

I can’t wait until I can use the line… “You can go print yourself a dildo and fuck yourself”
    Or something to that extent.
Suppose it’s DDD because of all the double D’s boobs that will be printed?

I have a uprint Se plus in my office and our factory has A dimension elite similar like Jay Leno has in his garage.. With Solidworks and a 3d printer, you basically have the ability to take a product idea conceived while taking a shower in the morning to a fully working mechanical prototype that afternoon . Its a total trip.. SSYS is the major player of course.. I can tell u resolution is critical for products that have working components whereby you need fit and function..

If/when this comes down to a general consumer price point, will this impact companies that make these trinkets? Mark up on plastic things is HUGE. $ 3.99 for a Chip Clip? Really? The public buys this junk all day.

This has first generation cell phone written all over it. Cool idea, but expensive and rather useless for the vast majority of people out there.

    Times will change though.

The Economist ran a great article back in 2011. Title was something like “The Future of Manufacturing” or “Manufacturing Revolution”, don’t remember now.

To me this industry looks as already being “commotidized”, so I guess the next bets should be placed lower in the value chain—to the suppliers of “3D ink”.

I love DDD I think they are poised to breakout especially in the small buisness not so much home market. One thought though. I feel there has been a big runnup and with a possible marketwide dip in the next 2-3 months plus its high pricetag and lack of a marketing campain make me feel thief first quarter sales will be reported lackluster cause the stock to come down to a much better entry level for a long term play what do you think fly?

I saw a demo of the retail model on CNN over the weekend. They had a few of them cranking out stuff including a head shot of the anchor in full color. The $DDD CEO said they used an I phone app to process a couple of the anchor’s photos to generate the 3-D. Pretty cool for a $1,300 toy. I could see this as a big holiday gift idea this season.

The amazing application of 3D printing is the ability to “print” functional tools as prototypes. The technology allows inventors to test out products including functionality in 45 minutes. Here the printer replicates a working wrench.
