well obviously if the WH now exempts Mexico and Canada and ‘other countries’ (e.g. the EU) that is a lot different than what the Admin said a day ago, ergo the strong finish. Trump has been treated somewhat unfairly on the Steel Tariff. In particular, the press is reporting that he thought it up all of a sudden and just blurted it out. In reality, the Commerce Dept. has been working on a report for months. On Feb 16, they made the recommendations for tariffs.
What’s more, here is what the DoD had to say (signed by SecDef Mattis):
“DoD concurs with the Department of Commerce’s conclusion that imports of foreign steel and aluminum based on unfair trading practices impair the national security. ”
If Trump follows the recommendations, then the celebration may be short-lived. The 25% was meant as a **global** recomendation. In lieu of that, an alternative recomendation is a tariff of at least **53%** on selected countries in Asia, South America, and Africa only. However, if Trump goes that route, I anticiapte that it will be harder to defenbd to the WTO and may be overturned (just liek Bush’s tariif)
the timing was ridiculous- of course he’s been ‘thinking’ (as that is possible for him)about the tariffs, but he caught his own administration of guard not to mention the markets. that’s like saying he is treated unfairly for his ranting treats because the ideas have been festering in his head for some time.
