The tariff covered 900 items and effectively shut down the international trade needed to keep all the heavy (WW I) war debt service requirements intact. Debt structure collapsed, the rest is history.
Trump’s tariff proposal takes place with global economies in good shape and growing. The comparisons are entirely bogus, but still makes for a good story among the uninformed, or impressionable, or just plain stupid players in the “casino”.
