Agreed, I am a youngish investor/trader, have been active in the markets since 2004. It’s amazing how many people I know who are trying to play stocks alongside their day jobs. Just a month go I literally overheard two doormen at a hotel in Chicago talking stocks with each other. It will be interesting though now that shorting stocks isn’t such a mystery to the investing public with all the bearish ETF’s and such, to see what happens. If there is a bear market coming up soon, I think it will be very tricky and both bulls and bears on the retail side will lose.
green candle, although I am unfortunately a far cry from the envious title of “youngish investor/trader,” (mid 40s), don’t underestimate the ability of some individuals to play stocks alongside their day jobs. I have a very nice six figure ‘day job’, and I have been doing just that for quite some time. And most years I make significantly more trading than I do from the first job. Of course being self-employed makes this easier. As for bearish ETFs (e.g., HDG is a joke, VXX has a 15% premium although if used as a day trade, and along with XIV, it can be quite profitable). Shorting stocks should never have been a mystery, it is actually just as easy as going long a stock. And I’ve made a tidy sum shorting stocks such as JCP and Sears. Personally I see sideways before bear – and with such, even on the ‘retail side’ there are the some great long-short funds – O’Connor, Mainstay, Blackrock… And if there is a bear market – perhaps retail bulls and bears will lose – along with some professionals – but moving into cash, or gold, or UUP, is not a difficult process. I realize there are some e-trade warriors who probably get their ass handed to them very quickly, but they are usually out of the game in a year. As will be the permabulls when the market gets choppy. But even for us 2nd jobbers, there are no “good” or “bad” markets – as a great trader once told me – there is only up, down and sideways.
I don’t underestimate peoples abilities to do that along side their jobs. Just an anecdotal comment on what I have been seeing. I’m not sure if it’s just my entering an age demographic where people are more interested in stocks, or the fact that we’ve had 5 years of a roaring bull market. But either way, most people I know are starting to get involved in the stock market even if they know nothing about it.
