Bargains or Value Traps?

I can’t sleep. My “calculator brain” is working overtime tonight, thinking of strategies to fix my situation. The great thing about the market: as long as you have capital, you can always make a comeback.

Looking over my screens, based upon the numbers in front of my face, a wide array of stocks are absurdly cheap. Or, maybe, just maybe, those numbers are lying to me. Like in 2008, had you stepped into names based upon value, you got the Grandfather Clock kicked the fuck out of you, as EPS for the S&P were slashed by 57%.

Let’s get bearish, shall we?

IF we slash EPS by 57% this time around, fair value for the S&P, based upon trough FPE of 13, is 530. That’s more than 50% lower from here, LULZ. So, before you declare the market to be “soooooo homosexually cheap” consider what I just told you. I find my lecturing especially humorous coming from a guy (me) 70% long into this mess. However, I promise you, on a stack of really cool King James bibles, I will repent for my sins against the stock Gods and get my shit together soon. See, if we have 50% lower to go, there is lots of time to get it right. In the big scheme of things, we’re barely down over the past 3 months, like 7%. I piss on 7%.

I hope you realize this market is EXTREMELY OVERSOLD at these levels. I mean, we haven’t been this oversold all year long. So, despite the gloom and the doom, like a fucking idiot, I am expecting a sharp rally and soon.

However, rallies should be sold into, until further notice. These are the things you need to look at, in no particular order.

Italian 10yr yields
Spanish 10yr yields
Earnings guidance at big industrial companies
TLT
UUP
FXY
GLD

If you can figure the shit out above and how they correlate with the market, you will figure this tape out. As of now, they are all showing signs of extreme panic. Incidentally, extreme panic leads to jubilation, as bottom feeders eat the carcasses of those being liquidated via margin calls. Oh, by the way, I know A LOT of people readying for margin liquidation. This is no garden variety sell off. The carnage in the basic materials, a sector heavily weighted by hedge funds, is destroying funds across America–like democrats on capitalism.

One other thing, beware of rumors that will start leaking out, regarding LM, MS and other asset management firms, maybe even custodians like BK and TROW. The credit markets are seizing up and things are about to get real sporty and fast.

You are not alone Fly. Insomnia due to lightning strikes to the brain is not uncommon on shit-storms like today (pun-intended). Still holding out for a home. Sub-3% sounds good to me.

Europeans have to start killing each other outright for the nosedive to happen. Otherwise, expect steep selloffs with intermediate rallies.

I wonder if you would actually write a blog like your comments.

Believe me Alf, you’ve grown on me. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s your transparency and ballsy plays. Anyone else pulling the shit you pull here would be a goner, a long time ago.

Good to see your IQ has finally kicked in … I put on my Grizzly Adams avatar nearly two months ago …

That said … we will still see 1240 or more per my OEW guy:

“The market opened quietly enough and drifted lower awaiting the FED’s policy decision. After the announcement, the market bounced around and then had a waterfall last hour of trading. The decline from yesterday’s high at SPX 1220 to today’s low at 1166 is 54 SPX points. This is what we expected the first time the SPX hit 1220 on September 16th. Despite today’s selloff we are sticking with our count of the potential uptrend to SPX 1246 over the next few weeks. The initial high at SPX 1220 is still labeled as an Intermediate wave A, and the action since then as Intermediate wave B. As long as the market finds support within the 1168 pivot range, or the 1146 pivot range, this count still looks good. Remember, this market has sold off on every FED speech/statement since the last FOMC meeting.

Short term support is in the 1168 pivot range, the mid-1150?s, then the 1146/1136 pivot range. Overhead resistance is at the 1176 and 1187 pivot ranges. Short term this market is extremely oversold.”

I honestly don’t know how you trade gold.

If the world goes into a shitter gold could be a buy.. but it depends on what sort. If its deflationary gold will get fucked. If it’s inflationary gold will go up, but that also depends on what happens to interest rates.

The Fed has fucked it up. Back in uni days and trading desks we always, always, always understood a flat yield curve was a sign of tightness in monetary policy.

The Fed’s twist program creates tightness by pushing up short term rates and lowering long term rates.

If you look at it logically and forget the economics you can see what the fed is doing will tighten things.

Most lending in the US is in the short term so the effect of tightening rates in the short term will have a worsening impact on the economy through tighter monetary policy.

This is a ghastly policy. Get the burlaps out.

I was thinking the same thing J. The other piece that you didn’t mention though is credit requirements. These have the effect of completely negating low borrowing rates, especially as is the case for mortgages.

I think it’s odd that the Fed is still playing with relative yield valuations to coerce investors into certain asset pools as it has already shown that if the horses are shown the water, they won’t drink. In other words corporations are not making investments based on low rates and the higher marginal yields on equities over bonds aren’t convincing asset managers to move from bonds to stocks. There was a positive response to the fiscal policy regarding IRS Code 179, but then the bickering and posturing started. Why not bring back that first time homebuyer credit too?

What you learned is not relevant to current conditions.

Monetary policy is already tight at the short end, because rates are pegged at near zero and can’t be dropped the several hundred basis points called for by models.

Your comment on China,,,,if it slows down watch out for the crumbling cardboard is spot on. Yet they have 4 aces–called US Treasury Holdings. Worse comes to worse for them they will be in the mkt selling and selling raising cash to keep their people in rice and Macau chips. NO other country has this advantage….if it happens the big issue is not their slowdown but that 5 thru 30’s will be on the rise from the sheer amount of “savings” supply coming into the mkt.
The distortion by the FED since 2008 could now produce in 2012 falling prices with rising bond yields. What took Japan 20 yrs to do will take us 3 yrs!

They have no hope of selling down their holdings without a serious haircut. So they start selling the market adjusts, they sell into it and then the market adjusts again.

They will still continue to accumulate US Dollar holdings and they can of course on sell those, but someone ends up with the bucks.
