tsla didnt pop from pin action off of (cough, sneeze, fart)gm.it popped on the news a big japanese car company bought into them,will develop/manufacture the batteries,and other production. the japanese are thinking of using them for fleet use.there was no news announcement,and the tidbit that i got, i picked it off stocktwts. and the link you put up,well whoever the author of that is,should have picked up that much about tsla, if the idiot was really covering their subject piece.it proves,that a positive thing like that would be ignored in the news……go figure
I am aware of the investments by Panasonic and Toyota. Everything looks rosy to me with TSLA. I’ve owned it since $20. I expect that it will go higher yet. That’s why I’m confused as to why there is such an enormous volume of short positions in TSLA stock.

The Fly cannot and will not reveal when he starts selling FTK. He owns too much of it. It would be like Warren Buffett telling the world he is dumping a stock. It creates a selling frenzy. He will tell you when the time is right – like after he dumps half. Dr. Fly is not stupid. He is up 50% and expects to see 100%. The silence is deafening when he is asked when is he selling. FTK’s Altman Z”-Score predicts bankruptcy. Another oil field services co iBCers are familiar with, Trico Marine Services, had an Altman Z”-Score that predicted bankruptcy too. An accurate prediction, as it turned out.
I bet if you run an Altman Z on every energy company on the exchange probably 75% have a failing score. Do you think 75% are going to go bust in the next year?
Energy and energy service companies operate in very captial intensive segments. The Z scores get skewed because of this.
It’s actually not hard to find energy cos with high Z”-Scores. I mentioned one example at the link — OII, the long side of that Altman pairs trade with TRMA.

You do not need an ALT Z score to realize the company cannot meet a potential 113mill bond payment in 2013. However, your ALT Z does not take into consideration the probability that it will be refinanced and rolled out.
That’s quite possible. And I’m guessing you’ll be out of FTK long before then. But some home gamers never take default risk into consideration and wind up riding stocks like TRMA down to BK.

Bad example. The Altman models (and other models that rely on financial statement data) are generally not recommended for financial companies. This is because of the opacity of financial companies’ financial statements and their frequent off-balance sheet items (See: here).
And as I mentioned above, there’s no shortage of financially strong energy companies with solid Altman Z”-Scores. If you choose to ignore them and buy financially distressed ones, that’s your choice.

I have to, In 2007 and 2008 I didn’t see the signs because I was sooo new at this and ran inside the herd over the Cliff. Now, I have been watching since March/April of 2009 and blogging about it, how the Import beyond actually demand of copper, etc by mainland China has been creating this huge artifical bubble that at some point will pop. I need to follow all the pieces of the bubble to understand it. At this point, we are in our 2008 time period…China stops Copper buying in the 4ish range, Starts selling reserves of other commodities, imposes price controls..and now, ala 2008, we have a catalyst that could start panic selling in certain Hedge Funds, etc if the Wall Street Journal Article plays out. And just like 2008, with most of Hedge Funds playing MoMo, this should be a domino that starts to trip, causing a dumping of all the names that those Hedge Funds hold. China is going to stop exporting diseal too, fwiw, announced this weekend.. In 2009, I was interested to see if the market would turn when the Quants saw a turn in Dr, Copper, and what makes Dr. Copper turn…it’s just been taking forever, but it has been a incredible learning process. Boom/Bust seems to be the pattern since 2000, just like the China Markets which USA so needs. BTW have a happy Thanksgiving.
