My virgin attempt to get in on VXX at 21.65 on monday resulted in me selling it at 21.47 today.
It was a negligible loss for me. Overall I’m still up 4.6% for the year, mainly because of significant diversification and dividend re-investment participation.
The last time urinal shadows were consulted there was an all in call followed by a fall. At that time we had been trending higher as well, similar to now – perhaps your earlier call was just that – early.
On the other hand, I see the politics of the upcoming election and Greenspan continuing to make the news stating that the markets are important to lead the economy by promoting confidence (PPT pump). QEII around the corner? The market is the only thing they can pump, the economy, incomes, demographics, credit and the money multiplier are not good – but what does that have to do with the market?
I am mentally stuck in primarily cash with some PM’s and energy but I don’t like it. Need confirmation on a direction with a decent risk/reward setup.
QE2 would send oil up to 85$ and above.
The price action in IWM over the last few days is becoming very clear. Smallcaps do not like 80$+ oil.
On the off-chance the fed does not ease, and we get a good jobs report, we’d see a US Dollar short squeeze. That would hammer XLB materials stocks. The US dollar has formed a vivid bullish descending wedge. We are one headline away from a rocket ride upward. Bad Geopolitical news, or Good econ news, would be all that is required.
So, i see nothing but doom ahead. I have been mostly bullish over the last year, with the exception of the top in April. Im actually more bearish here than I was then.
I know that in theory lower rates means banks borrow more and lend more to more people… However, if home prices keep failing, income keeps dropping as unemployment keeps going higher, who in the world are the banks going to lend to as foreclosures continue to mount?
Plus, why would the fed ruin their own balance sheets by buying up bad debt in the name of “saving the economy?
This country is bankrupt, and its creditors are no longer interested in paying high prices for our bonds. That is why the fed will ruin its balance sheet and buy up bad debt.
