A: The patient is still sick — and no sign of recovery has shown up in the box numbers so far.
According to the Fibre Box Association, shipments fell 3.5 percent in the second quarter of last year, compared with a year earlier. Then they fell 3.3 percent in the third quarter. After that, the bottom fell out: Shipments fell 9.9 percent in the fourth quarter compared with a year earlier.
This year corrugated box shipments have fallen, on a year-over-year basis, 5.1 percent in January and 8.3 percent in February. The numbers for March will be out in mid-April.
“There has been no improvement relative to the previous three months,” Longbow Research analyst Joshua Zaret said. “March should show some seasonal improvement within a context of weak overall demand, but these are very poor numbers.”

Dynamic Materials Corporation (BOOM) tumbled lower at the open, with the shares dragged into the red by broad-market woes. Oddly enough, though, the stock rebounded into positive territory just after midday — right around the same time that S&P Equity Research downgraded BOOM from “hold” to “sell.”
BOOM price chartToday’s mostly inexplicable trek higher extends BOOM’s recent winning streak on the charts. Since March 9, the shares have climbed consistently, and they’ve won the support of their 10-day and 20-day moving averages in the process. However, a technical hurdle looms almost directly overhead in the form of the equity’s 20-week moving average. This trendline has contained all but 1 of the security’s weekly closes since March 2008.
In response to the stock’s strength, option players have started to gravitate toward BOOM’s calls. During the past 10 days, traders on the International Securities Exchange (ISE) have bought to open 15.13 calls for every put. This ratio ranks higher than 92.5% of other such readings taken during the past year, revealing that the equity’s call options have rarely been more popular.
Meanwhile, short sellers have scrambled to find the exits. Short interest on the shares has fallen sharply since last October, and tumbled by 20% during the most recent reporting period. This steady influx of buying pressure may have helped contribute to BOOM’s short-term uptrend. If the shorts continue to flee their losing bets, the rally could continue — short interest still accounts for a respectable 7.2% of the equity’s float.
