Job Cuts Update
In my piece yesterday, I highlighted 20 companies that had announced layoffs in the preceding 2 business days. The list is long to be sure.
Today there were some notable others: United Stationers (USTR), DuPont (DD), Corning (GLW), ValueVision Media (VVTV), Gevity HR (GVHR), Avery Dennison (AVY), Temple-Inland (TIN), McGraw-Hill (MHP), Baker Hughes (BHI), Cooper Industries (CBE), Verizon (VZ), Delta Air (DAL) and Ashland (ASH). And it’s only 11 AM.
Stocks continue to ‘coil’–more on this later–and are building up an incredible amount of energy for the next move, which in either direction ought to be a DOOZY. For what it’s worth, I am flat here after taking profits yesterday.
If the job cuts continue, the Depressionary environment that looms may arrive quicker than most believe possible. Again, just one man’s opinion.
I just have no idea what will absorb all of the extra capacity that lurks around the world in everything from oil/gas to homes.
Except time. Lots and lots of time.
In the meantime, buyers of stocks in here should be mindful of the daily string of layoffs. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy, I believe.
