Yield Curve Steepens

If the Federal Reserve is endeavoring to steepen the yield curve, in part to help widen net interest margins in the banking system, its efforts are working. The yield spread between 2- and 30-year Treasuries is today at its widest since March, at 270 basis points. This is a sharp increase from early September when the spread was about 200 basis points.
In the last rate-cut cycle that ended in June 2003, the yield spread was as wide as 363 basis points, virtually matching the peak of the easing cycle of the early 1990s, which ended in 1993. There is, hence, scope for additional steepening, as yield-curve trends tend to be long lasting, reflecting the slow shifts in the Fed’s policy cycles, and for reasons mentioned below.
The yield spread between 2s and 10s is on the verge of breaking new ground, moving to 235 basis points today, up from 232 basis points Wednesday, and now just 4 basis points from this year’s peak on Oct. 15, which was the widest spread since April 2004. The peak for the last easing cycle in the 2s/10s spread was 274 basis points in August 2003, and no wider spread has been seen since at least 1977.
A study by Estrella and Mishkin covering the period 1960-1995 indicates that a yield spread of over 121 basis points between 3-month bills and 10-year notes equals a recession probability four quarters hence of less than 5%, which means that today’s 355-basis-point spread is certainly a positive. The spread was -60 basis points in February 2007, which yielded a recession probability of about 50%. This is an indicator with a superb track record.
The yield curve is likely to continue steepening the more the Fed indicates or implies that rates are likely to stay low for an extended period, and as new Treasury supply is sold. Massive increases are expected, with a mixture of new securities (3-year notes and other maturities, possibly), and more frequent and larger issuances (monthly 10-year notes, and larger quarterly 30-year bonds).
A steeper curve will result also when investors begin to anticipate more stable economic conditions and acceleration in inflation, a situation that is still a ways off, but not all that far on the horizon from the standpoint of investment in longer maturities.
The banking sector would, of course, benefit from a steeper curve, a nurturing aspect of the Fed’s cut in interest rates. A steeper yield curve also tends to precede more prosperous times for the economy.

On several popular stock message boards, people are speculating that Charlie must have been drunk because he was not responding to any of Dylan Ratigan’s questions. Dylan asked him about the Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER) merger and Charlie kept mumbling, “What have I got. What have I got.”
Later, Dylan told Charlie, “we only have limited time.”
To which Gasparino says, “What have I got? What I got is shoot for the capitalism.”
Dylan: “Shoot for the capitalism’? What?”
Charlie: “What have I got?”

After that, CNBC quickly cut away from Mr. Gasparino.

It seems that Barack Obama is not qualified to be president after all for the following reason:
Barack Obama is not legally a U.S. natural-born citizen according to the law on the books at the time of his birth, which falls between “December 24, 1952 to November 13, 1986?
Presidential office requires a natural-born citizen if the child was not born to two U.S. citizen parents, which of course is what exempts John McCain though he was born in the Panama Canal. US Law very clearly stipulates: “.If only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least ten years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16.” Barack Obama’s father was not a U.S. citizen and Obama’s mother was only 18 when Obama was born, which means though she had been a U.S. citizen for 10 years, (or citizen perhaps because of Hawai’i being a territory) the mother fails the test for being so for at least 5 years **prior to** Barack Obama’s birth, but *after* age 16. It doesn’t matter *after*.
In essence, she was not old enough to qualify her son for automatic U.S. citizenship. At most, there were only 2 years elapsed since his mother turned 16 at the time of Barack Obama’s birth when she was 18 in Hawai’i. His mother would have needed to have been 16+5= 21 years old, at the time of Barack Obama’s birth for him to have been a natural-born citizen. As aformentioned, she was a young college student at the time and was not. Barack Obama was already 3 years old at that time his mother would have needed to have waited to have him as the only U.S. Cizen parent. Obama instead should have been naturalized, but even then, that would still disqualify him from holding the office.

Though Barack Obama was sent back to Hawaii at age 10, all the other info does not matter because his mother is the one who needed to have been a U.S. citzen for 10 years prior to his birth on August 4, 1961, with 5 of those years being after age 16. Further, Obama may have had to have remained in the country for some time to protect any citizenship he would have had, rather than living in Indonesia.
Now you can see why Obama’s aides stopped his speech about how we technically have more than 50 states, because it would have led to this discovery. This is very clear cut and a blaring violation of U.S. election law. I think the Gov. of California would be very insterested in knowing this if Obama were elected President without being a natural-born U.S. citizen, and it would set precedence. Stay tuned to your TV sets because I suspect some of this information will be leaking through over the next several days.

I run several businesses – one that serves the gov’t and others the commercial markets, Pharma, electronic, hotel, casino, etc. From what i see and hear daily, We are not out of the woods yet. I know the market is future oriented, but my clients are preparing to lay off more people and spend more money with firms like mine – which is bearish. IMHO.

I see this overall view as the market is going higher as a weakness. It’s like a cocky fighter, when you’ve thrown him down to the mat hard, and he gets up and laughs at you and says “is that all you have?” The next time you not only throw him, but you finish him. I know we have not seen the teeth of this bear – we will.

take a look at the up volume vs down volume the last few days. They have finally shifted from 5 to 1 down to 3 to 1 up after quite a long negative streak.
We are starting to see stocks rally on bad news as mentioned tonight on Fast Money.
Volatility is starting to calm … point spreads have been 200-400 points but we are stringing up days together rather than up slightly one day and down big the next. We have even had a few days that didn’t sell off in the final hour and today, while it looked to be fading we actually rallied into the close.
Finally, bear markets don’t end abruptly. They takes months and sometimes years to play out. Most technicians agree that we are looking for an “intermediate” bottom, no “the” bottom and a rally off these lows s/b quite healthy and not end in a few days. These waves take time to play themselves out and the current rally is still being debated as to how real it is. The wave techs I follow are indicating that we must accede 990 on the SPX to confirm the uptrend with a potential of reaching 1179. Conversely, a breach of 912 would mean a retest of the 840 levels and the potential for continuation of this leg down. Again, this is not the absolute bottom we are seeking. Just a relief rally that can last weeks to months before the next leg down takes us to our final bottom most likely some time in 09′ but it is too soon to predict the final bottom.
That’s my take anyway …
