We’ve got a tale of two dividend boosts: Verizon (VZ) and Masco (MAS) . One was right to do — Verizon, which had one of the best quarters I have seen this reporting season. The other, Masco, seemed almost reckless, kind of like the Washington Mutual and New York Times (NYT) dividend boosts, which were really untimely.
You have to go over that Verizon quarter, you just have to. Texting on fire. Wireline not a disaster. Most important, FiOS was really strong, and I would be careful, analysts — the surge in Comcast (CMCSA) orders may not occur if Verizon’s got game.
Masco, on the other hand, really didn’t seem to see this slowdown coming. And while I like dividend boosts, sometimes the by-rote dividend boost — what this one felt like — can only be considered dangerous, especially because a dividend cut would have been prudent.
I have to tell you that while I think the world of Masco, and I believe that housing will bottom next year, I would have preferred if MAS had hoarded money.

Supporting today’s rally in share prices worldwide is the infusion of cash by the Federal Reserve into the financial system via its Commercial Paper Funding Facility, which was launched yesterday. The CPFF is a facility created to purchase commercial paper directly from issuers, which in recent times have had difficulty obtaining money from the capital markets. To wit, the commercial paper market has contracted by about $350 billion over the past six weeks to $1.449 trillion.
Paper bought by the Fed relieves the financial markets in two ways in particular. For one, investors that might normally invest in commercial paper that is instead bought by the Fed will “float” in the financial system, making more money available for alternatives. Second, issuers that obtain money from the Fed will fall back on their credit lines much less, freeing money for the interbank market and for lending.
As for the CP market itself, note that the rate paid by issuers of 90-day asset-backed fell 10 basis points to 3.69% today — the recent peak was 4.66%. The 30-day rate fell 6 basis points to 3.23%, its lowest in about 5 weeks.

Not surprisingly with indices up from 9 to 13%, my port was up 13% today. With the strong close, market could gap up tomorrow, get sold a bit, and then run into the FOMC announcements. And then who knows, certainly not moi. At this point, I am ready to add to core longs on a pullback (will review a bunch of stuff tonight and tomorrow which could change that perspective).
