If anybody believes that we have a short term (or otherwise) bottom on the dollar you should take a look at the UUP etf which is long the dollar using futures contracts based on a basket of currencies. I think I heard that the Japanese are not going to be raising rates for awhile (after two years of doing so).
It has already done 6x the normal volume this AM and the spreads are good considering.

A question for all the doom & gloomers on the apparent slowdown, collapse, recession, or depression that we are or will be enduring in the U.S. Why are the casual dining stocks that have reported so far like BWLD, PNRA, and TXRH beating expectations if consumer spending is going down the crapper. This is happening during a time when food prices and gasoline prices are sky high. I have been in the bear camp for a while myself so is this just a false reading for a quarter or are we at a turning point in this slowdown? Granted this is a small piece of the puzzle in the big picture but something doesn’t add up. Were expectations just so low or is something else going on here?

Because people know they have rebate checks coming. So they spend like crazy and go into debt, and then they use the rebate checks to pay them off.
BWLD should report a good quarter, because they just had NCAA March Madness, and the early spring is good for them.
It’s definately possible for a few retailers to do really well, but the overall do bad. And you measure their quarters priced in oil, gold, or commodities, the quarter is probably down.

Casual dining is doing well because people are fat, don’t know what good food is and/or can’t afford to eat at nicer places. Add in the insane margins they make on the booze they sell and I can see why they are doing well.
Anyone option traders here? I have never been a big option guy but C May 25 puts look good. Then again like I said I am not much of an option trader.
