Beating the Drums of War

Let’s see who’s right, shall we?

You and your sub 100 IQ or “The Fly’s” market mastery and 155 IQ.

You know as well as I, today was a horrendous day for the market, which was masked by strength in oil and [[BA]].

At this point, I have my cards. I am playing my hand with the temerity of a hungry mountain lion, inside Bob Pasani’s house.

My top holdings include: [[SMN]], [[SRS]], [[SKF]], [[FXP]] short [[FED]], short [[DSL]], short [[LEH]], short [[TSCM]], short [[MON]], short [[WM]] and long [[DGP]].

Now, I’ll just sit here, patiently, waiting for recessionary eps reports to come rolling in.

    Fly:

I said I was a genetic engineer not an english teacher. I have decided to use colloquial language and grammar as to not alienate your “sub 100 IQ readers”.
Anyways the Fly might win sometimes, but the bag of flesh you call a body will eventually need my company’s cures. Hence, I will get the final victory.

Shit, Lurker, I’m glad you weren’t off in an aloha suite anywhere… (ggg).

I guess you never went through an “analyst program” (it’s the “straight outta college” thing) in a Bulge?

Well, from my experience, most of the Bulge’s have had a “force field” around those people for the history of those programs. Even when shit was hitting the proverbial fan at First Boston (before it had to sell itself to the Suisse), and they were letting entire departments go in order to raise capital, they did not let one IB analyst (or their trading floor equivalents) go.

This was true of the other Bulge’s too, from my experience and from what I’ve heard from friends. True even during the Dotbomb meltdown, etc.

And Goldman, crap, they don’t let that many people go, period (I always likened them to an Ivy League school… hard to get into, but once you were there, you had to set the managing partner’s/Dean’s office aflame in order to get fired/kicked out).

So obviously, when I heard this piece of news today, it raised some red flags. Now, caveat… I have not been in NY for a while, and that whole “cultural” aspect surrounding the analyst programs may have gone by the wayside in the last couple of years.

It just doesn’t seem to make sense, though, as one of the reasons they made a practice of NOT killing the juniors is that it was bad for recruiting when they wanted to ramp up again.

It sort of gives me the willies that those considerations have been set aside.

Dcr had a big forced sell today according to the desk I talk to. It decoupled from oil about mid day when it fell through 7. I would expect this to correct soon. I am hedged long dvn.

Doesn’t 450 oil make your car get better has mileage? That’s what they told me atleast on cnbc.

    Gapping:

“The reason DCR is down so much today is because there is an early termination clause in the structure of the notes. If the front-month price of crude closes above $111 for three consecutive days, the termination clause takes place and the notes will stop trading at their NAVs on the 4th business day prior to the end of the quarter that the termination occurs. Shareholders will receive distribution on the 3rd business day following the end of the quarter.

Going into today, DCR was trading at just over $9 per share, but its NAV was $3.82. Remember, if oil closes above $111 for 3 consecutive days, the termination clause goes into affect and the shares are redeemable at NAV at the end of the quarter. As oil trades above $111, the share price has moved lower and lower. This trend should only accelerate as oil stays above $111. Currently, DCR is down 26.33% to $6.76.”

Jake – I looked at that site. Its for a small niche genre, electronic/DJ stuff. Virtually zero sales as a genre.

However, I like how they sell the loops/samples for DJs and the finished tracks for consumers/fans. The loops and samples are the money makers as producers/programmers need fresh stuff to make remixes and new albums. It’s as important today as a great vintage Les Paul was decades ago.

The space is very competitive, and technology dictates what kids of samples work for the producer – Reason, Apple Logic, Protools, etc. File types are proprietary, so its hard to roll up the whole genre. You have to productize the audio by technology and that gets expensive. Frequently the hardware side reserves file types as proprietary, and wont let samples get released without a licensing fee.

Some friends made a nice chill out CD in this genre, which I recommend. Found here:

    http://www.chillodesiaclounge.com/

They are selling it, at my advice, in lifestyle stores primarily. High end furnishings, high end clothiers, etc.

There is no money in music right now. Some money in the gear/software that makes the music.

If you are investing in them, and need advice, I’m happy to help.

Check out AVID, a company that does this stuff:
