Here’s the Richard Pzena piece Cramer talked about tonight. Figure 5 is illuminating. If we’re in recession, history suggests value is going to outperform growth/momentum for several quarters.

First of all, this is not a late night thought, where is the fly with his late night drives – post midnight? Just like 47 1/2+ year olds aren’t allowed, we can’t be having this type of early bird special announcement masquerading as late night info.

Second of all – down with Rockefeller.

I suspect Fly was up all night after the Super Bowl so his internal clock is a mess. I hope it doesn’t carry over to the Time Machine.

From Legg Mason Commentary (written in mid January):

    “A report from
J.P. Morgan strategist Thomas J. Lee
released on January 7, 2008 noted that the
percentage of bearish investors in AAII’s
    latest weekly survey (1/04/08) exceeded
the percentage of bulls by 29.5%. Only 15
times in the last 1,100 weeks, or 1.4% of
the time, have the percentage of bears
exceeded the percentage of bulls by 26%
or more. In every prior instance when the
reading was this negative, the S&P 500 was
higher in 12 months by an average of over
    20%.”

Pud, 21 years is not very long to look back. That data does not incorporate any of the bears from the 1900’s to 1970’s. In fact, other than the 00-02 bear, there really isn’t a major bear market included in the data used by the J.P. Morgan strategist.

Anyway, it’s a psychological game. While I’m bearish, I’m sure the indexes will be higher 12 months from now. The problem is, can the average trader withstand the whipsaws until the bottom is set? Probably not. I’m confident that new longs are going to get shaken out here, and soon.

So, as it has been said before, capital preservation is the key for most. Those expecting a swift return to the easy uptrend of the bull are going to get kicked in the groin, even if the bottom is already in.

I’ve been thinking about market crashes lately, researching history. What would happen if internet connectivity was disrupted at the exact time of a market crash? what if it was disrupted to a certain geography, like…China. or Arabland. The powers that be could isolate and crush the economies of enemies with a swift crash that cannot be traded, because access is cut off. Take away the uptick rule, change circuit breaker policy, change margin rules…and then turn out the lights.

It’s late and I know I sound crazy. Fuck off.

other measures of sentiment with longer track records are showing the same thing as the aaii #’s such as,

    p/c ratios

short interst in absolute terms and internal ratios.

also insider buying. look at todays bloomberg article that i provided a link for early this morning.

    P/C ratio is bearish Chivas.

Short interest is high, but has backed off to near Nov.-Dec. levels, at least on the NYSE as published in Monday’s IBD.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen insider buying as an accurate indicator, at least when used as a gauge of broad-market sentiment. I mean it seems intuitively bullish…I just don’t accept it as thus at face value.

Let me ask you a question. Why are you guys fighting tooth and nail the reality that bottoms are typically tested before becoming set? Furthermore, why is it so important to you that you nail the bottom, almost to the day? What’s a few weeks if the indexes are going to rally insane-like for the rest of the year?

    p/c ratios are very bullish

15 day equity p/c ratio- 74.6 same level as the august and march lows.

15 day total p/c ratio- 105 almost at the level of august and march lows.

isee p/c ratio 15 day 100 exceeds levels of august and march lows.

short just shy of all time highs with corresponding internal ratios.

read the article that i bookmarked then talk to me about insider buying.

i can only answer for myself. i am not fighting anything. i am only providing information and responding to a cetain element here that thinks the world is coming to an end.

FWIW, if you look at the Investors Intelligence Survey, bulls are still outnumbering bears, 40% to 32%. I personally hear and see a lot of people calling a bottom now and last week. Bear markets usually end when no one thinks a bottom is going to happen. They get so frustrated and negative and feel that the market is never again going to up, and finally just throw in the towel. That’s when the market makes a significant bull move upward.

I still have to think this is a bear market rally.

Hey Chivas, how’s it going – thanks for the info – I thought the world was falling, but you put me right. Bring me a glass of Walker Blue, I like good Scotch Whiskey, not that there’s anything wrong with yours.

update.. although Cheating Ben and Lying Hank might still save your stock picking skills.

update 2.. Cheating Ben drops interest rates by 150 basis points on the account of the futures prices in the overnite. Lying Hankk is carting cash to everyone’s mailbox strait from the treasuries press.. as much as you want.. first come first served.
